Quote:The Appalachian Athletic Conference of the NAIA isn't giving up its AACSports.com URL anytime soon, though the old Big East -- named the American Athletic Conference as of Wednesday -- didn't call the league to inquire about it.
As part of the league's announcement, the old Big East plans to go by "American" and not by the letters.
That's fine with AAC commissioner John Sullivan, who still wonders if there will be confusion.
"I wish they had called," Sullivan said. "Maybe they figured we were NAIA and they didn't need to."
They could have avoided a lot of confusion by calling it American Athletic League.

I think Sullivan nailed it ~ the Appalachian is NAIA, and so "The American" figured they didn't need to.
And in this case, they are probably right. After all, the Appalachian is NAIA. The widest exposure the majority of the American sports-following public has to conference outside the FBS is the alphabet soup of conferences represented in March Madness. If The American had picked "Conference of American Athletics", then the CAA would indeed have caused some substantial confusion.

The name is growing on me with each passing day. It's not amazing, but no new name was going to be. It's bland, but it doesn't force a number or a direction that doesn't fit.

it isn't growing on me. i accept it as i can do nothing about it, but it lacks identity. I keep imagining people asking "american what?" whenever it is spoken of. worse yet if it is referred to as AAC. i think it would have to hold together for a very long time before people started associating it with any of our institutions (and i don't expect that it'll last long enough for that to happen).
that was one of the good things about "conference usa". we were distinct because the word conference was before the name. nobody else did that. the same was true of the name great midwest - it was not just another "big" conference. this is just more non-descript letters - and entirely too close to the initials of a conference that will overshadow us mightily in basketball. there isn't even a comparison to be made for how much we'll be overshadowed in football.
so memphis ad, pres, deans, coaches, etc: have we sent christmas cards to the ACC, its school presidents, deans, coaches and boards? have we done the same for the big 12?

Well the fact that we have fifteen pages of comments on this thread tells me a lot more folks will be following the new conference.
