If CUSA gets UL-Lafayette and Ark St
BruceMcF - the rule you posted says that those eight (or more) members must play six sports in the conference. The Sun Belt will be in the grace period for 2013 and 2014. The Big East/AAC was in the grace period for the 2012 season. Once App State, Georgia Southern, and a team to be named later all finish transitioning, they will count towards the 8 full member requirement.

NMSU is the backup for 2015 all-sports membership should something happen to further deplete the ranks. Idaho for all-sports would be the emergency pick.

Inviting NMSU for all sports now keeps the clock from ticking in the Sun Belt, but Karl Benson may also not be trying to jeopardize the WAC, as the WAC needs NMSU to meet the requirements for a Division I non-football conference. Idaho doesn't play baseball or men's soccer, so they don't help the WAC.

Yes, the grace period is for falling below eight full FBS members. Are you saying that NMSU and Idaho are not full FBS members?

Oh, wait, there's another sentence there:
Quote: An institution shall be included as one of the eight full Football Bowl Subdivision members only if the institution participates in the conference schedule in at least six men’s and eight women’s conference-sponsored sports, including men’s basketball and football and three women’s team sports including women’s basketball.

So its to guarantee the five FBS home games after all. Looking at some 2013 Sunbelt schedules, a lot of schools only have five home games, and make full use of the single FCS exception as well. ULL was already using NMSU to get to five.

Neither NMSU nor Idaho will play six sports in the Sun Belt so neither counts toward the 8 needed.

When Boise and SDSU temporarily left the MWC they were down to 7 countable schools but had 8 for football. Hawaii didn't count toward the 8 needed. That's why they quickly added SJSU and USU to get to 9 countable schools even though they had 10 for football.

I don't think I'd go THAT far.

I would.

Big Men On Campus: SEC & B1G
Who think they are the Big Men on Campus: PAC 12
Who's Happy To Be Mentioned With The Big Men on Campus: Big 12/ACC

not ideal, sure but hideous? c'mon.

Depends on more realignment happening, but those schools could match up well. Heck, maybe pick up UNI, NDSU, Montana, Montana State, Idaho, UC-Davis, Portland State and you could have a good competitor to CUSA West and the MWC.

The new Southwest Conference?

Texas State
New Mexico State
U. of Louisiana - Lafayette
Arkansas State
Missouri State
U. of Northern Iowa
North Dakota State
U. of Montana
Montana State
U. of Idaho
UC Davis
Portland State

Ok so Ark st would win conference tittles every year with those teams! Lol...weak conference!

Ark st would rather go to the Mac than stay in a fcs move up sun belt!

isn't the sun belt already a fcs move up conference?05-stirthepot

and i guess i missed where the mac wanted you and you declined to stay in the far superior sun belt.05-stirthepot05-stirthepot

Sbc has better head to head record against CUSA in football and it's not even close in last few seasons! Asu has also beat Memphis what 4 of last 5 meetings!

Arkansas a state as won back to back conference tittles in what has been a stronger sun belt conference in football! A lot stronger than CUSA or WAC ..pretty even with Mac . Rare Thing to see a Memphis fan commenting about football 07-coffee3

And no Montana schools are good fcs school, funny they arent being contacted to go fbs...there is a reason, most believe they wouldn't be able to sustain!

Yes, as the comment you quoted immediate previous had just said.

Yes, the worry is whether the short notice period in the ACC causes Majors shenanigans on a short deadline, leading to short notice moves in the Mid-Majors. Remember that while the Big East had a 27 month notice period, the ACC has ten and a half months ~ 15 August notice to leave the following 1 July.

But its kind of like a Californian worrying about whether there will be a killer quake interfering with their vacation plans. If it happens, it happens. And I am very skeptical about any massive change actually all happening in one big convulsion, the way the WVU/Big12 bloggers seem to enjoy imagining. Its more likely that one dramatic change hits, and then it has its aftershocks, and that destabilizes things and allows one or more changes to happen for the following season or two, which then have their aftershocks ... and given that not every raid requires an equal sized reload (witness the A-10 after losing members to FBS and the New Big East), it really requires a very peculiar set of circumstances for serious problems to arise.
