B1G to go to 9-game schedule in 2016
http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball...e-for-2016

Quote:As early as next week, Big Ten presidents and chancellors will vote on and likely approve a nine-game league schedule starting in 2016, Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez told CBSSports.com.

A 2016 start allows Rutgers and Maryland a two-year transition and Big Ten membership time to plan non-conference scheduling before adding a league game.

So I guess by 2017 or 2018 we'll have 13 game seasons, since I don't think any of the giant schools wants to lose the gate revenue of an extra home game every other season.

Well whaddya know, somebody else who thinks an expansion of the season as a whole is inevitable.

You may be going all out on the sarcasm here but I am pretty certain the college football season will be expanded by at least one game at the beginning of the season at some point in the future.

Its bound to happen. I see a 13 or 14 game regular season pretty soon. 14 is more practical allowing conferences to have 10 conferences games.

14 games? What about the stress that would put on the poor student-athletes (LOL).

That really starts to cut into preparation time before the season starts though and also will push future conference tournaments too far into the late season and winter.

In my opinion if the end game was a 9 game conference season then no push for a 13th game would be required. It is for when conferences may have to absolutely move to 10 game seasons that they will absolutely need a 13th game for the season. They might be able to push for a 14th but I am confident that the Majors could push for a single game added on.

That would give them 5 home games in conference and on most years they will have 7 home games if they are able to schedule some 2 for 1's. Some years they may only have 6 home games but that small loss will be mitigated by much bigger returns in other areas.

I think the 13 game season is not a question of if but when. Instead of starting the season earlier I could the season being played latter in the December with conference championship games played during the second weekend in December. This will close the gap between the the conference championship and the bowl/playoff games.

This would allow some of the larger schools to play 7, 8, or 9 home games, while playing 9 or 10 conference games.

A 13 game schedule will allow for major non-conference games and old rivalry games to continue, plus the 13 game will be the force that drives expansion as 16 team conference with 10 game conference schedules become the norm.

Why would conferences have to add teams? Why wouldn't the conferences just add another cross divisional game? Seems like that would be another game for the conference network?
(well except for the Big 12, can't play somebody that isn't there)

I operate under the belief that we will absolutely see Conference Tournaments in the future. Commissioner Bowlsby seemingly agrees with me as he has already made public statements about wanting to be able to control how his conference chooses which teams take part in any potential conference tournament.

That means an extra week added to the end of the season already. So what you are saying is adding TWO weeks to the end of the season. They might do that, or they might just add a week to the beginning of the season which would basically end up being the cupcake week for most major schools.

Nope, no sarcasm. The teams with 90K+ stadiums will push for and get an extra game.

Quote:The Big Ten wants to create as much flexibility as possible with its league schedules.

A 10-game conference schedule, once considered by the league, is no longer a possibility because of the necessity of teams needing seven home games a year, a source said.

http://espn.go.com/college-football/stor...ources-say

The consensus is 7 home games (no more or less) is being protected for revenue reasons.

I'm not sure how this affects programs like TCU which signed a 1 for 1 with Ohio State as a future series. How are programs like Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State and Nebraska going to afford to play on the road?

By scheduling two opposing 1 and 1's and then a third opponent that will be a 2 for 1. The year that their 2 for 1 is an away game will have to be the year they get only 5 conference home games. So one year they might have only 6 homes games with this system but during another year they could have 8 home games to have that average of 7.

If we go to a 13 game season among the Big 5 conferences...I suggest this:

The week before Labor Day is FCS weekend. Every school plays a home game against a FCS school. The leagues set sensible rates to pay schools. RPI's will not be computed for figuring out who makes the playoffs. Exception: you lose the game the RPI will be used.

Or they could move the away games of their 1 for 1's to years when they have 5 B1G league contests.

I'm sure TCU will accommodate.

If the NCAA allows for a 14 game schedule then I see them having to add additional scholarships as the teams will need more players for a longer season. Playoffs could mean up to a 17 game schedule... Conference, Semis, and NCG. Of course this would only affect the SEC as we win it every year... lol.

How convenient the newly minted NCAA rules allowing unrestrained recruiting would be at that time?

I think the schools with 50 K stadiums would be equally enthused. It's just more money.
