I think for one- the 1pm NYE slot will probably most years "feature" the G5 school. ESPN treating it almost as a throw away. The 1pm NYD slot which used to be Cap One bowl land has always done really good ratings- no reason why that won't continue.

No. They are adding a playoff and an extra BCS game... plus the NC game. That's the 250 million. Has nothing to do with playing the games on those dates.

And that last paragraph is funny because the Go5 vs the AQ has garnered the most interest in recent years in games outside of the NC game. You can sell that game as the David vs Goliath, and that generates national interest.

RE: Orange Bowl - Permanent move to New Year's Eve?
Given the Peach Bowl has now garnered the inaugural "BCS" status (Cotton felt like a BCS bowl last year even though it wasn't), I can see that getting shafted in the 1:00 ET slot every year on NYE, unless it is a SF game where it will go to prime time.

These 6 bowls will be the only games aired in those slots, unless Fox/NBC/CBS want to compete against that. The 1:00 window will not be a playoff game any year based on this format. NBC carries the Winter Classic so scrap that, although they could have a Bowl game on early in the morning (like the Gator at 10:30 am ET).

The Capital, Holiday, and every other Bowl will either be aired in prime time leading up to the Final Four, or they will be aired the week after New Year's. Either way, the games will be in prime time every night. It just depends on how many decent bowls are in the lineup every year. And that pool will grow worse given that there are now 12 "BCS" teams off the board as opposed to 10 in years past. Given that fact, I think ESPN will eventually move the lucrative bowl on 1:00 pm ET NYE to the week after NYD. That said, that's the only time slot that spells death (along with the 4:00 pm ET game), and it only affects those 2 bowls scheduled there. Not a big deal, but still a waste of TV revenue income.

They are adding 2 semifinal games. That's it. Before we had 4 non title BCS games. we now have 4 non title BCS games. before we had title game. now we have title game.

Also- before the BCS itself was worth 155 million dollars for 5 games. Now, for 7 games, it's worth 600 million per year. So, 450 million more for 2 semifinal games.

The 250 million I was using was comparing the ENTIRE system to just the new BCS part.

If the ratings are poor for the 12/31 games, ESPN will push to get the schedule changed so that they get their money's worth for the TV rights fees they are paying. The non-semifinal games could be moved from 12/31 to primetime on the days after 1/1. The semifinals (in seasons when the Rose/Sugar pair is not hosting semis) could be played on the Saturday that falls between Christmas and New Year's, which would be much better for TV ratings than playing semis on Dec. 31 when the 31st falls on Mon-Thur.

That's exactly what I expect to happen. I even expect the Rose and Sugar to eventually move to that Saturday when the Rose/Sugar are hosting, but not for a while. Those games will be played that Saturday, probably as early as winter 2015/2016.

While I think the others will probably move, I see the Citrus (Capital One) staying on New Years Day. ESPN used to have 3 Big Ten/SEC games on at exactly the same time, so I think they'll tolerate a little overlap. I could see it starting a bit earlier, noon, maybe 11am eastern.
