JMU to AAC?
“You have to go and recruit a different type of player,” assistant coach Mike Deane said. “If James Madison goes into the [American Athletic Conference, the old Big East football league], because they think their football can compete, and now all of a sudden you’re playing Connecticut and Cincinnati, you can’t expect a guy to automatically just walk in and start competing in that league.”

“How do you think Central Florida is going to be in the Big East this year?” he asked. “If we’re going to change leagues… JMU is not bringing in first-team All-Americans, McDonalds All-Americans.”

RE: JMU to AAC?
It would be foolish to move beyond 12 (unless we can bring someone in who increases our payout). It would be even more foolish to bring someone in from FCS... leave that business to the Sunbelt and C-USA.

No need to pile up on the guy who posted this. At the very least it's a compliment to the league.

If JMU were a real option, they wouldn't be, it would be ODU.

RE: JMU to AAC?
I think the OP is taking the article way out of proportion. The AD, coach, or whoever is simply saying that if his school is going to move up in conference stature, then that said conference cannot just expect his team to just come in and be able to compete for titles when he was just competing in a pool of recruits with other FCS schools.

Umm. Way to take a comment out of context.

Here's a useful quote from the same article that is much more fact-based:

Quote:JMU has hired a consulting firm to determine, in part, whether the university should move its Division I-AA football program to I-A. Although the Sun Belt has shown significant interest in Madison, sources have said, the school has not reciprocated. JMU’s more likely destination would be Conference USA or, to a lesser extent, the Mid-American Conference.

That said, I have no idea why he has to pick on UCF's basketball. I like who we have coming back and coming in and I think we'll be fine in the American. By no means are we going to win it, but we'll do alright.

I didn't think there was anything behind it, but thought I would run it through to see if there was any chatter. Was just odd he was using the AAC as an example, thats all.

IMO, the way he used The American as an example, he probably understands that his program has a much better shot at competing in the Sun Belt or CUSA right away than The American. Just my take on things.

JMU isn't ready to jump to The AAC... perhaps in the future, but not now.

Does this mean the JMU consulting firm thinks the Mid-American Conference is a lesser conference than Conference USA?07-coffee3
