Game 5 of the ECHL Eastern Conference finals held true to form on Saturday night. That was bad news for the Cincinnati Cyclones, and just fine by the Reading Royals.
Cincinnati outshot the Royals for the fifth straight game in the series, but for the fourth time in five games, came up short where it matters: goals.
Ian O'Connor, Kirk MacDonald and T.J. Syner scored as Reading beat the Cyclones 3-1 at U.S. Bank Arena, wrapping up the best-of-seven conference finals four games to one.
"They were the better team tonight," Cyclones coach Jarrod Skalde said. "Through the first four, I thought we gave ourselves an opportunity, and they could have gone either way. But tonight, I thought they were the better team."
Dan Eves scored in the second period for the Cyclones, who fired 26 shots on goal to Reading's 20. For the five games, the Cyclones outshot Reading 186-141.
"We could talk about the breaks they got, or the bounces, pull back and talk about all that stuff, what if, but we lost to the better team," Skalde said. "They're well-coached, they've got a lot of depth, they've got size, and their goaltending is tremendous."
Reading goalkeeper Riley Gill saved 25 of 26 shots, including any number of tough chances, in his ninth straight start of the postseason.
Game 5 began uneventfully, in contrast to the fireworks of Game 4 on Friday, when the Royals scored twice in the first 62 seconds. Saturday's first period ended in a scoreless tie.
Still, a scoreless tie beats a 2-0 hole. And the Cyclones were 5-1 in these playoffs when tied at the first intermission.
But the 2-0 hole was coming.

At 7:08 into the second period, Reading's O'Connor led a 2-on-2 rush up the right side, and the lefty fired over sprawling defenders trying to block the shot, and by goalkeeper Michael Houser, for his fourth goal of the playoffs and a 1-0 lead for the Royals.
The Cyclones came up empty on their two power plays, both in the second period - and fell further behind in the process.
On the second, Reading's MacDonald faked clearing the puck through the middle and instead carried it through the neutral zone, getting behind the defense and beating Houser for a shorthanded goal, his third of the playoffs.
Eves cut the deficit in half when he gained control of the puck from a pileup in front of the net and pushed it across from the left side to make it 2-1 with 3:55 left. Eves notched goals in all three games in Cincinnati.
The third period started with 1:19 left on a power play for Reading, left over from a 2-minute minor for boarding to Mike Pelech. It was the shorthanded Cyclones who got the better chances out of it, with a couple decent cracks at Gill, but couldn't put one past him.
With 11:04 left, their task got tougher when Syner added an insurance goal for Reading, his fifth of the postseason.
With 1:35 left, the Cyclones pulled Houser for an extra skater. Cincinnati's best chance came during a scrum at the doorstep with 46.2 seconds left, but Reading's Gill covered up for a faceoff.
The Cyclones' eighth playoff appearance came to an end in the conference finals, the fifth time they've gotten that far. The last time, 2010, the Cyclones went all the way to the Kelly Cup championship.
"I'm proud of our guys, and proud of our effort," Skalde said. "It was a really good year."
