This thread should be made a sticky at the top of each board. I will pm you later with some suggestions from the perspective of a new member.

Thank you very much for the time and $acrifice made in getting the site back up!

Just out of curiosity, are you mirroring the OS drives (SSD i'm assuming) and mirroring the data disks? Why not pay a little more and get some server class drives, 10-15k?

Not knocking your config, just wondering.

The SSDs are mirrored for the database, which needs rapid non-consecutive reads ... which a SSD is best at.

The regular drives are mirrored for the apache webserver, which has very low I/O demands.

Haha! Completely killing off guest access makes a pretty dramatic difference. I think this will be a nice compromise stop gap that keeps everybody happen, lets me re-enable tapatalk, and keeps things snappy. The unregistered will be pissed. They will get over it.

I track it manually as it comes in. The listing you see in post #2 is as of 11:59 PM ET Thursday.

Just a likely ignorant question, if high volume sites like Amazon & eBay run in a cloud environment -and other large sites use theirs's or similar configurations, why are you still buying servers? Why not just let an Amazon or someone like that handle your server needs & run on the cloud?

From post #1:

Quote:Q: But hey GTS ... what about that Cloud stuff! Amazon AWS! Etc!
A: I priced that during the downtime today while waiting for stuff to compile. Just getting a database with enough oomph to hold us on Amazon AWS will be THREE TIMES the overhead. I shudder to think of the monthly cost once I've added Elastic Beanstalk instances for PHP. The entire reason I buy and colocate the hardware is that over the lifetime of the server it ends up paying for itself several times over.

Also, not all high volume sites are Cloud. Reddit tried Amazon AWS and kept having constant outages. They bailed on the cloud. Oh sure ... Cloud can be robust ... but it will be VERY expensive, the performance you get per unit of equipment is roughly 15% lower due to hypervisor and virtualization overhead, among other issues.

GTS, I'll make a contribution over the weekend. Too busy @ work right now.

You're right about not using a "cloud" provider. Over the long haul, you would lose control AND it would cost a lot more.

Thanks for all of your efforts.....
