Notre Dames' biggest rivalries are based in the Big Ten, they draw very well there. There is no way that Big Ten teams stop playing Notre Dame or vice versa.

Not sure why ND would also play a football game there unless they're thinking after Wrigley gets renovated/expanded.

Because their biggest fan base is there.

No expiration date.
So, really, either side could give notice (however that is defined) and call the whole thing off at any time? Not that either side wants to or would do so, but contractually they could?

ND is bound to the ACC just as any other member. GOR for the length of the contract and pay the $52 million exit fee.

What about ND rotating Big Ten opponents through ND's neutral-site games? Play Penn State at the Meadowlands, or Northwestern at Soldier Field. Wisconsin keeps trying to get a name team to play them in Green Bay (without Wisconsin returning the game, which is why they're having no luck) -- how about Wisconsin playing Notre Dame at Lambeau Field?

The GoR will make that not as easy to do, The ACC is our home for lonnnnnngggg time I bet.

And I for one am now happy about that. Took me awhile to warm up to it but I like it now. ACC,ACC,ACC.

Yep, three things:

1) The ACC is where ND wants to be for a very long time. They love the ACC deal.

2) ND signed a ten year GOR for everything but its home football games and its home hockey games, all televised by NBC and NBC Sports, respectively.

3) ND agreed to the current ACC exit fee of $52 million and would have to litigate out of that fee and the GOR.

Why would it sign these deals just to turn around and then spend tons of money going to court to fight to get out of them?

For what, exactly?

It wouldn't. ND selected the ACC partnership for the long term. It is not going anywhere. Thoughts to the contrary are just wishful thinking.

P.S. Isn't ND's membership in the ACC the same type of agreement as any school with any conference? There are no terms or contract lengths between any school and a conference. Can't every school and every conference "give notice" at any time? Contractually, any school or conference COULD, right?

I am not sure what your point is.

Well, ND's "neutral site" games (the "Shamrock Series") are actually ND "home games" played away from home.

ND only plays six true home games in South Bend lately and likes to move that seventh home game off site to a big venue as a "barnstorming" game.

ND controls the gate and NBC televises the game. ND brings the entire band, most of the university and almost all of the fans to the stadium.

ND wears its home uniforms and the field is converted to look like the one at ND Stadium with no logos and with diagonal stripes in the end zones.

It is all done to make that site (Cowboys Stadium, Alamodome, Yankee Stadium, Soldier Field, etc.) look like Notre Dame Stadium as much as possible.

They have been doing this for a while, now.

I don't think that Big Ten schools would go for a "one off" game like that.........

Maybe a home and home like this could work out?

The only other option would be to move a Big Ten school's home game to a neutral site? I doubt this would happen, either.

A true neutral site game would mean that someone is losing a home game.

Notre Dame's biggest rival is Southern Cal. It is not even close.

ND would rather play Navy every year than a Big Ten school. I am sure, or hope, that everyone knows the World War II story by now where the Navy saved ND from closing down.

Stanford is becoming a pretty good rivalry. ND alternates Southern Cal and Stanford away games to play every year in California for recruiting and exposure to West Coast fans.

Michigan had become a pretty good rivalry, but the two schools had only regularly played since 1978.

Michigan had boycotted ND from 1910-1941 and from 1943-1978.

ND just canceled the series, for now at least. I doubt that it ever will be an annual thing again.

That leaves Purdue, whose fans loathe and disdain ND. Purdue needs ND to fill their stadium and get them on prime time. Why play them? Recruiting? Exposure? No.

Purdue needs this game way more than ND does, though the Boilermakers would never admit it. Why help Purdue?

I would personally rather see ND use the Purdue slot to play schools like Baylor, TCU, Texas Tech and Oklahoma State for additional Texas/Southwest exposure.

The other Big Ten school is Michigan State, who wants a series of two year breaks in the games already.

I do hope the Irish play the Spartan occasionally in the future.

Blacklisting a team is always a temper tantrum. UMD is doing it with Georgetown over a basketball game, some ACC schools are threatening to do it to us.

It's petty and childish.

I guess it would be if the ACC was actually as secure as Swofford leads us to believe after you guys pulled a Baltimore Colts. What is it with your state?

We're finicky. How are the charlotte hornets doing this year?

I agree about USC/NAVY, I had noted not long ago USC/Navy were far more important to ND than any Big10 rivalries or quasi rivalries.

ND should schedule Army,bc,wake forest,duke,tcu,baylor,air force,smu etc.

The B10 does need ND

With 9 in conference games there will be plenty top teams and great revenue.

To have a team of the challenge of Purdue available to schedule in September in between two more challenging schools, at a financial benefit in away years since its what the Brits would call a derby game, so its an away game without the normal costs of an away game.

And you say "whose fans loathe and disdain ND" like its a bad thing. That kind of attitude also make a game against a particular opponent more appealing as a media spectacle than a game against an equally soft opponent.

It is a bad thing. Look, I understand rivalries and getting the fans fired up about a match up. I live in Baton Rouge. Alabama/LSU is an emotional rivalry.

ND and Southern Cal is one too. The respective fans don't like each other, but there is a mutual respect and appreciation for the rivalry.

The Purdue fans I have encountered in South Bend and on Purdue web sites are not like that. They are vile, mean spirited and totally disdainful of ND and the history/ tradition of the series.

I am not thin skinned either. I have been Tiger Baited by LSU fans at ND/LSU fans. No problem.

Purdue fans are bitter, angry, vile and totally disrespectful. They make LSU fans seem like Harvard students watching a polo match by comparison (at least when ND is involved).

I'd rather ND punt on these guys. Purdue fans can enjoy half empty home games on regional TV versus Indiana and Minnesota.

Why "reward" them with a prime time or national broadcast game?

ND isn't ever worried about travel costs. I'd rather have a series of home/home games against Southwest schools.
