There is almost always a spot somewhere, and if Notre Dame falls short of the BCS but wants to go bowling, the bowls with open spots are going to fall over each over trying to talk to Notre Dame about filling it.

ND can obtain a spot opposite the ACC representative in the Orange Bowl (when that bowl isn't a semi-final game) as long as the Irish outrank the best available BiG team or SEC team.

They can be chosen for a non-semi-final "Event Bowl" by the selection committee, if they don't qualify in the two scenarios above.

Neil, by my understanding the bolded part is not possible. The only "event" (the 4 bowls in the playoff rotation that are NOT hosting playoffs in a given year) bowl ND can play in is the Orange, it can never play in any of the other 5 playoff-rotation bowls unless those bowls are hosting a semifinal.

This severely limits ND access to these 4 non-playoff major bowls. Correct me if i am wrong ..

2014-15
Sugar and Rose: Semi-finals
Orange: ACC v. B1G, SEC or ND
Cotton, Fiesta, Peach: B1G, SEC, P12, B12, G5, 1 At Large

If I understand it correctly, there would be only one available slot for ND in this scenario aside from the Orange.

2015-16
Orange and Cotton: Semi-finals
Sugar: B12 v. SEC
Rose: B1G v. P12
Fiesta, Peach: ACC, G5, 2(?) At Large

I'm not sure if the B1G/SEC/ND slot in the OB is guaranteed an Access Bowl slot. Not sure it matters from ND's perspective, as it is eligible for the OB slot in any event.

2016-17
Fiesta and Peach: Semi-finals
Sugar: B12 v. SEC
Rose: B1G v. P12
Orange: ACC v. B1G, SEC or ND
Cotton: G5 v. At Large

Basically, in any given season, ND appears to be fighting for a semi-final slot (unlimited), an OB slot (2 maximum over 12 years), or a single At Large slot (unlimited).

I believe only the conference champion is guaranteed an Event Bowl if the contract bowl is a semi-final and the champion doesn't make it to the playoffs.

So for example in the first scenario above where the Sugar and Rose are the playoff games, if the SEC, Big 12, and BiG champions are all in the playoffs, then an SEC, Big 12, or BiG team goes into "the pool" that can be chosen for the event bowl but doesn't have to be while the Pac champion is guaranteed a slot in an Event Bowl.

It's only the contract bowls when not a semi-final game that are guaranteed a conference team even when the champion is not available by virtue of being in the playoffs.

So ND's chances of being in an Event Bowl increase when both the Sugar and Rose are the semi-final games and is less so in the other years.

Cheers,
Neil

you might be confusing the ACC with the Big East

Well, the ACC does have BC, Miami, Va. Tech, Syracuse, Pitt, and Notre Dame now.

True, but the BE never got a guaranteed 5 game annual schedule with ND having to play all 14 members. 03-wink

That's a significant difference that some want to ignore.

Yes. The bowl access is better than i expected. But allowing the ACC commish to fill half your schedule is 03-puke

Think about the irony in all of this. With the Irish likely to continue to play USC, Navy, and Stanford on an annual basis and now will play Michigan State 4 times out of every 6 years into the 2030s, they basically have 4 set opponents.

It's those 5 games that come from a commissioner of a conference that actually give the Irish the variety that provides the illusion of independence, when in reality they are now semi-independent.

That's genius on Swarbrick's part to build basically a conference schedule while holding on to the illusion of independence for both the Irish fans and the casual college football fan who doesn't have the time to think about these things like we posters.

Cheers,
Neil

I like the Irish but this statement scares me a little:

"The five BCS bowls and the remaining 30 bowls all have contracts with conferences or specific teams for this year. Contractually if there are 70 bowl-eligible teams, Notre Dame -- if it doesn't qualify for a bowl -- would have to stay at home.

However, industry sources believe there would be some last-minute re-negotiations between bowls to make room for Notre Dame. A bowl could "pay off" a conference by allowing the bowl to take Notre Dame instead of a team from the conference it's affiliated with.

"I'm guessing there would be some bowls who would look to redo deals at the last minute to get Notre Dame," a source said."

This kind of funny business by a conference is a big reason why Missouri became so disgruntled with the Big XII a few years ago. So which contractually binded conference stiffs which conference school out of a bowl? At least this won't be a problem in 2014.

Notre Dame has shown no interest in helping anyone else other than Notre Dame. No one owes them anything.

That being said, I'm sure ND will just make the ACC give up a bid.

Aren't you an ND fan, Steve?

I thought you had emailed and/or PM'ed me to that effect a year or so ago?

I have criticized Swarbrick for some things but the Irish deal was a masterstroke, maybe the biggest ever by any commissioner. Swarbrick now owns 45% of Notre Dame's schedule, the most valuable schedule in college sports. The deal was also surely the factor that clinched the GoR, which saved the conference.

In return, he gave away nothing but some shared bowl slots, which paid for itself because thanks to NDs involvement those ties will be better than they otherwise would! Likewise, it cost the ACC nothing to host NDs olympic sports, to the contrary the ACC will make money on that since those sports are more valuable than the average ACC teams olympic sports.

In short: the ND deal not just saved the ACC, it also gives the ACC about three million dollars more per school per year in media money, and provides tremendous exposure via 5 games vs ND each year, and at absolutely NO COST to the ACC!

I like the ACC deal with ND. Let me make that clear. I think it helped both parties which is the goal here.... I just hope that when the bowl selections come around, the ACC has to give up a bowl. That's the price they pay for a good deal and stability...... (and completely ruining the rwalignment board...lol
