Saint Louis runs off Jared Drew
"Jared Drew was planning to take his last final exam on Tuesday, come home for a few days, then return to Saint Louis on Sunday for the start of summer school.

Instead, Drew said, he received a text that the coaching staff wanted to meet with him. At the meeting, Drew said coach Jim Crews told him the school was not going to renew his scholarship for next season.

“I was completely blindsided,” said Drew, a 2012 Cathedral graduate who redshirted last season. “I don’t believe they handled that situation as well as they could have. [Crews] basically told me I’m not the right fit for what he’s trying to do. I’m moving on, though.”"

"The same men who preach loyalty and maturity -- who sit in families' living rooms and promise the world to teenagers, who make millions of dollars while their players get classes and a dorm room -- are all too willing to cut a player loose for no reason other than he is no longer a "good fit," which usually means his scholarship is being given to someone more talented. And Drew is supposed to sit out a season?"

I'm a SLU fan. I don't defend this act at all.

I don't know what the rule is, and I'm for making transfers sit out a year, but he shouldn't have to sit out a year if his scholarship is pulled.

I don't believe he has to. This isn't a transfer since he isn't asking out of his scholarship.

Well this is essentially a coaching change and this stuff happens all the time when a new coach comes in.

There are a couple of waivers he can apply for in his situation and not have to sit out a year. Big East isn't going to hold this against us, right?

Good luck getting recruits when you have a reputation of pulling scholarships with no warning.

This happens at every school when a new coach takes over.

No, it doesn't. Although, it's becoming more common in the major conferences.

Yes, it does. Ever follow FB? Way more prevalent in that sport but common in BBall too. If you play a high tempo offense why have four big men post players on your team? The coach only has about three years to prove himself at that school. Sorry kid but you don't fit my system. I don't see an issue, the kid can transfer without sitting out a year.

No, it doesn't. A coach might go to a player and say they probably won't see playing time in his new system and should probably transfer out, but they don't just up and cancel a player's scholarship on them with no warning.

Unfortunately, I think this happens all the time everywhere, it's just Crews and SLU got the spotlight put on them.

I don't support it, but I hardly think SLU is the only school in the country that non-renews players.

It's not as common at the mid-major level. And at that level, the schools are usually more professional and helpful in assisting the students with getting the appeals and transfer work in order. They know where their bread is buttered, so to speak.

Crews just pulled a Calipari on the kid. It's despicable anywhere, even at the championship factory UK, but at a small, Catholic, mid-major university?

Interesting comment on that ESPN story from the father of a kid who was cut out during the Majerus power transfer. Good Christian folk there in St. Louis...
