RE: Apple TV adds WatchESPN and others
Quote:WatchESPN on Apple TV delivers a one-stop video destination for sports fans with live access to ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN3 and ESPN Buzzer Beater/Goal Line to those who receive ESPN’s networks as part of their video subscription from affiliated providers
In other words, people who already get ESPN can now watch it on another platform. [rhetorical question]When can I buy a subscription to watch ESPN without having cable or satellite?[/rhetorical question]

Most likely not. It will probably work the way HBOGO does with cable providers. If you log into your cable providers account you can access the content.

WatchESPN already works like that. You can download the app to your iPhone or Android phone, but you can only watch the content if you have a subscription with a provider that has made a deal with ESPN.

ESPN3 has been exclusive to Xbox for TV viewing. This is a nice addition. About time given that Steve Jobs was Disney's biggest individual shareholder and a Disney Director as a result of the Pixar deal.

RE: Apple TV adds WatchESPN and others
So what do I need to watch ESPN3 or WatchESPN? I could watch it before on my computer when I had Comcast as my internet provider, and I believe AT&T might also have that, though I don't know if their speed is up to the task as I've never tried that. And I didn't have ESPN on my cable package then. So Apple TV simply allows you, with the addition of the HDMI cable, to hook up your computer to your TV and get Watch ESPN to display on your TV?

There's a little bit of a difference between WatchESPN and ESPN3. WatchESPN is the application to watch both ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU games as well as ESPN3 Internet-only games. In order to access that app, you would need a Comcast or AT&T U-Verse *cable* subscription with ESPN. (Apple TV plugs right into your TV with an HDMI cable, so you actually don't even need a computer, although the Apple TV device makes the most sense if you have other Apple products to synch with.)
ESPN3 games alone can be accessed on your computer if you have a subscription with an *Internet* provider that has a deal in place with ESPN. (Comcast and AT&T would both have such deals.) However, if you only have an Internet subscription but not a cable subscription, you'll only have access to the ESPN3 games via streaming, while ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU games will be blacked out.
Of course, if you have a cable subscription, then you don't really need WatchESPN to watch ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU games on your TV - it's really most beneficial for tablets and most smartphones in that situation. The Apple TV deal has the biggest impact for people that want to watch ESPN3 Internet-only games on your TV more easily.

Thanks. Right now I have a google TV so I can surf the net on it, but my internet connection is too slow really for streaming. If I had cable subscription to ESPN, would I still need Apple TV or could I get ESPN3 or WatchESPN without it? Trying to figure out the cheapest way to get at least ESPN3. Comcast was charging an awful lot for internet.

Don't know about other providers, but Time Warner includes ESPN3 and WatchEspn with cable only subscriptions. I stream it over dsl, 1.5-2.0 Mbps, without much trouble. Obviously not in hd at this bit rate.

Cable vision (Optimum) doesn't have a deal in place.

Yes. Purchase a $99 Apple TV (or a few dollars less at Fry's in Downer's Grove), hook it up to your television with a HDMI cable, connect to wifi or hard wire, log in to WatchESPN, and watch your game in high definition.
Are you a Comcast customer?

As for cheapest way, you can login from your computer through your browser.
(If you are using Google TV, try going to ESPN3.com and seeing if you can login.)

I used to have Comcast for my internet service but cancelled as the rates kept going up. Right now I have Virgin Mobile which is significantly less but a lot slower and they apparently don't have any deal in place anyway. I have not been able to get to either ESPN3 or WatchESPN
