The Armed Forces Bowl organizers clearly like having Air Force. The AAC has Navy. So obviously there's a basis for a MWC vs AAC game.

Would it make sense to have the Armed Forces Bowl alternate?
1. Air Force vs AAC West champion
2. Navy vs MWC runner-up?
And if AF/Navy isn't available, switch the order, having the other go twice in a row?

Would the MWC want to spread their only Texas bowl around a little more? Is there too much AAC-MWC bad blood over the Boise defection to work a deal?

Could Aresco's network background actually pay off, getting the Armed Forces Bowl a higher payout based on selling it as an academy bowl almost every year?

Or is this idea stupid for a reason I haven't thought of?

seems like an excellent idea to me.
I'd probably watch Air Force vs. Navy (or vs. any other AAC team, just about - then again, I like AFA's style of play)

Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times said yesterday he though AAC may get this bowl, I believe. I think it will be a straight up AAC/MWC bowl.

The AAC has to be able to get some bowls from somewhere, or maybe the plan is to sign no tie ins at all.

Army has an agreement to play in this game in 2014 and 2017. Navy has a deal with this game for 2013 and 2016. MWC has the other slot for 2013.

So there is one slot available in 2014, 2016, and 2017, and two slots available in 2015. Probably a conference will also have a backup deal to fill an AFB slot if Army or Navy doesn't win six.

They tried that for a while with the Liberty Bowl. It was basically an at-large vs the CIC trophy winner, not sure how long it lasted perhaps only until CUSA was formed. Or maybe it was CUSA champ vs CIC winner until Army joined CUSA. Either way it did not last long, and I don't think the ratings were really there. And that was before the bowl proliferation. Not saying it couldn't work, just that there are many obstacles.

I cant imagine having the #1 or #2 in the AAC facing off against a 6-6 Air Force as being anything anyone would want to see. I'd rather this be a MW #1 vs AAC #1 or if that's not in the cards, then just make it an eastern MW vs a western AAC.

I ran with this idea while mowing--AResco's the TV network wizard, right? HE's the guy who got Army and NAvy on CBS-SN in the first place, and sort of revived the ARmy-NAvy game as an event.

What if he could get ESPN to hand over the game to CBS? Make it the official kickoff of bowl season, the Saturday after the ARmy-NAvy game. Maybe sell CBS the Military Bowl, too for the Saturday after that. Tie in the Army-Navy game, the Armed Forces Bowl and the Military Bowl into a three-week series, all the while reviewing and hyping the upcoming ESPN bowls.

With that sort of presentation, the good news is the Armed Forces Bowl puts your school on TV unopposed on a Saturday afternoon in an Event. That bad news is that you might as well show up wearing a Osama Bin LAden's robes and waving commie flags, because everyone not from your school is going to be rooting for 'Murica.

It might be an AAC bowl if the majority of the bowl board, which is mainly TCU people, allow it. There is a STRONG dislike of smu on the board and thus an AAC bias--it goes to when the bowl was played at smu for 2 years. My last understanding was that it will be a MWC bowl and leave the other side of it open for contracts like the one with Army.

The only thing is the service academies play each other during the regular season. I don't think they'll want to play each other again in a bowl game?

That's why I figured you rotate Air Force vs. AAC one year, Navy vs MWC the next year. (Also gives you 'Murica! vs Some College every year.)

It must not be much of an issue for the Armed Forces Bowl. SMU has been in CUSA for nearly a decade. The Armed Forces Bowl has been affiliated with CUSA since 2003. In fact, they invited SMU to play in the bowl in 2010. By the way, teams that will make up the future AAC western division have been in the Armed Forces Bowl 7 of the last 9 years. It appears to me that the Armed Forces Bowl committee seems to like the western division of the AAC.

RE: Armed Forces Bowl idea
I expect the armed forces bowl to remain a MWC bowl with opponent rotated with

Army, Navy, BYU, and western AAC

MWC commish recently said he expected the MWC bowl lineup to be unchanged after the 2014 negotiations but did not know who the opponents would be in those bowls.

However BYU is working with the MWC to launch a new bowl in LA. They are looking for a sponsor
