Does that make UNT more popular than Tech?

You seem to be saying that commuter schools are more popular because they have lots of local alums and frankly I have to disagree with that.

A&M is more popular than UH just like Tech is more popular than UNT even if the commuter schools have more local alums.

10th, I agree with you here but I disagree that A&M is by far the leader in Houston. A&M has a ton of alums in Houston and they are very vocal when A&M is doing well. I know, I grew up in Houston during the late 80's, early 90's A&M SWC championships. Tech and UT are also very well represented in the Bayou city.

Bullet is wrong about UH. They have to be undefeated or play a Big 12 Texas to garner respectable attendance/TV ratings. He is right in that they have a ton of alums in Houston but how many of them actually care about UH? We both know the answer to that based on years of attendance data to back up our claims. Same thing with Tech, UT, OU and A&M in DFW. UNT graduates a ton of students but how many of them actually care about UNT once they graduate. As a recent UNT grad, I have a pretty clear idea of how little support they get here in the Metroplex.

Edit::: (Coog fans, I have no desire to debate this with you so stop before you start. The truth is in the pudding and it is backed up by years of evidence)

I did caveat it with "when A&M is winning". Lot of younger UT fans want to pretend the 80s to mid 90s never happened and that it could never happen again.

IF A&M continues its success in the SEC, there's little doubt this years ratings trend will continue but of course A&M has to keep the winning up.

I live in a dead zone. Moscow and Pullman are the same metro area, with two crappy D1 schools. The closest city is hours away, and has nothing but the Zags.

1. Vandals, because it's the home team
2. Washington State, because they're within 6 miles
3.Seattle Seahawks
4. Gonzaga
5. Mariners
Tied for last: U Dub and Boise State. They are mortal enemies of Moscow/Pullman teams, and the same distance from the area.

In Houston, its the pro teams depending on the season. Outside of that is a crapshoot.

Texas---- Tons of UT alums & T-shirt fans .
A&M------ Lots of local grads who couldn't wait to get back home out of College Station with a ton a t-shirt fans in East Texas.
Tech------ Lot a Tech grads who left Lubbock for a better job with the hopes of returning to North/West Texas when they retire.

SMU/TCU/Baylor/UNT/Rice/ TX State/Coog high alumni hope their University can remain somewhat relevant trying to fight the Big 3 in Texas

I lived in Houston for years and still go down there every few months for business.

All you have to do is walk around and you'll see more LSU stuff than UH stuff.

Think of it like this: there are wayyyy more UNT grads in Dallas than there are Tech or OSU grads...but does that make UNT more popular than those two? Of course not, since like UH, UNT alums dont care about UNT and nobody pays them any attention so they can hardly be called more popular than Tech or OSU.

That is false and shouldn't be spread on a national message board like this. Maybe it was that way around the turn of the century but not now and I see UH gear and car emblems every day and I'm not even close to the heart of the city.

The biggest problem for UH is the fanbase is so fickle and won't love the school through thick and thin.

Good list. I would put Ohio State ahead UK. In a recent poll on 1530 Homer, OSU was way ahead of UK like some five percentage points.

3. Cincinnati: I'll put them as #3, but preface that by saying most fans are also Ohio State fans. That probably sounds strange to someone in Cincinnati, but we aren't rivals and a lot of Ohio State fans like seeing other Ohio teams succeed.
4. Various MAC schools: I'm not going to break this one down further because I wouldn't do it very well. That said, we obviously have a ton of MAC alumni. Even more than with Cincinnati though, most are also Ohio State fans.
5/+ Notre Dame and Other Big Ten schools: Not huge populations, but you see them around on football Saturdays. While numerically smaller, they stand out more than their Ohio school breathen a lot. Less from the western side of the conference (and the eastern side too once we complete expansion). Ranking here is difficult. Michigan State, Penn State, and Notre Dame would probably be the top ones. Know some Indiana/Purdue fans though so think we might get more of those just because of distance than others.

I don't find that strange at all. There are many UC fans down in Cincy who also root for Ohio St (they are just very clear UC is #1). There is not nearly as much hostility between the two schools as is played up.

As far as Cincy goes, I agree with CliftonAve said on the first page. I would switch OSU to #6 and UK to #7, but otherwise I think that's dead on.

I haven't lived in the Cincinnati area in a long time, but I would be interested in seeing someone's opinion who wasn't a UC fan. As I recall, his list was pretty accurate except that UC and Xavier seem over-rated. They would be below Ohio St., but all would be below HS football.

I would be curious to see a non-UC fan's list as well, but I would be very very surprised if someone thought OSU was above UC and Xavier in Cincinnati. And although high school football is very popular, when it comes to rooting interest, I wouldn't think it would be above college football.

Cincinnati has a very unique culture that is distinctly different than the rest of the state. Its barely a part of Ohio really. That leads to a much larger sense of local pride (hence the UC/Xavier and high school football interest).

Now if you were to expand the area to include the Cincy/Dayton metros (essentially all of Southwest Ohio), that would surely change the focus of things.

I would have agreed with you 20 years ago. But it's amazing what 5 seasons of 10+ wins and 2 BCS bowls will to build a fanbase, and IMO it's come at the expense of the Bengals more than anything else. Xavier is definitely ahead of OSU, too. There's a lot of Xavier fans who root for OSU in football season, but at heart they're Muskies fans first.

I also agree that OSU and UC are not rivals. They never play each other and rarely recruit the same players. It would be a great rivalry to start, but for a variety of reasons that's not going to happen for fb (although it could for bb). I think a big thing egging it on is the fact that a lot of the anti-OSU crowd that used to root for Michigan (similar in number to the Michigan fans in Columbus) is now rooting for UC instead.

Like I said, I haven't lived in the area in a long time. Several years in the Big East could make a difference. For a long time Cincinnati was generally pretty bad in football. And Xavier is much better in basketball the last 15 or so years than they used to be. So I was curious to see the perspective of a non-UC fan.
