ODU has good upside.

That being said, that fact that they won a recruit over Cincy and ECU is yet another prime example that the AAC is not looked upon as any better than CUSA from high school students. If anything, the re-branding to the AAC has hurt them more than imagined and it will take years of "on the field" performance to regain some of the respect it had under the Big East Banner.

.

I agree with this. I think if the AAC brand impacts recruiting for schools in a positive manner, it will be on the hardwood. I think everyone recognizes the AAC as the schools that lost their BCS bid. I'm not saying it's going to hurt football recruiting, but I do not believe it will significantly substantiate it. With that being said, ECU was already recruiting at a higher level than most of the current C-USA members, and I don't expect schools like that to change. I do not believe the AAC is the magical answer to Memphis or Tulane football. Tulane's stadium will help them much more than the AAC will. (Not an intended shot at Memphis or Tulane, just providing an example.) Schools like Southern Miss will continue to out recruit schools like that.

The question for this conference, the Sun Belt, and eventually the AAC with expansion, is where these schools with what is considered to be a ton of upward mobility, like ODU, eventually fit. These new schools really are a wild card, whether you believe they will be a good or bad one is up to argument at this point, but they will have an impact.

Don't think it's hurt us one bit, in fact it has helped. Yes, we little chance of landing this guy kid, but the mere fact we are still in the mix says lot,

Kentavious Street, defensive end for Rose High School in Greenville is a Rivals.com five-star and has garnered more offers since we first talked to him in February.

"I've lived in Greenville with my mom for about one year. We moved here from Georgia. I have gone to three ECU games during this past season," he said. Moreover, the 6-foot, 4-inch 255 pounder has had the opportunity to meet Head Football Coach Ruffian McNeill. "I love how the school is down to earth and how Coach Ruff is more like a big brother than a coach. I can commit to him, which is something I don't have with other coaches. I really love that."

We asked him to catch us up on how things are going with him and ECU. "Things are great with ECU. I plan to visit for spring practice and I hope to watch games there during the fall," he said.

It's possible, but not very likely as it's a bit more difficult to accomplish that in Virginia (UAB's situation for example), as all of the universities are independent state agencies with their own board (there are no state systems). ODU being the lone large research school and FBS program in Hampton Roads really helps our situation given the areas population. FWIW, UVA football barely registers in the Norfolk area.

Fascinating. So, in VA, there is no state run college board full of alumni from one or two schools that are protecting the status quo in the name of "regulating" higher education. that would be the first step in improving higher education in MS; disband that miserable cabal of bureacrats that are holding the state back.

A recruit picking ODU over two AAC schools doesn't not prove ****.

ECU gets players over P5 schools sometimes. Does that mean CUSA is better than those conferences?

I agree. It's a positive sign that ODU is able to compete with established FBS teams for recruits, but it doesn't show anything above that.

Recruits choose schools for many reasons and ODU has a hell of a lot to offer, we have the perfect recipe for a successful football program and people can see that. One person choosing Pepsi doesn't mean that it's better than Coke. Maybe they prefer Pepsi or there wasn't a Coca-Cola vending machine around; however it is a positive sign. We aren't Walmart own brand any longer.

Something else that I've noticed in my year living in Virginia is that there isn't really a single school that has a stronghold on the "hearts and minds". Unlike in MS, AL, TN, NC, etc etc etc where you have one or two schools that hold such a popular advantage in their states that the system can use that to justify their corruption.

It may just be a Northern Virginia thing, but I don't see VT or UVa nearly as much as I did Duke/UNC/NCSU back in North Carolina.

I guess I'm left wondering why ECU offered in the first place? Was he bigger & faster when they initially offered, but somehow got smaller & slower (doubtful)? Or did the ECU football staff offer him without looking (doubtful)? Or was it something else?

Exactly. If we'd got him a lot of ECU fans would be praising him that he's a good "diamond in the rough" and our staff can "coach him up" into a great FBS player.

As you can see, we've got the usual "ECU messageboard defenders" chiming in on this. Just ignore these stupid comments.

Not knowing the history of the guy or when the offers came, but I could see them pulling a hair trigger on a guy that shows a lot of promise on their first look, trying to get in their early and increase their chances if his stock does rise.

In this case, his stock probably didn't rise like they expected. That being said, they obviously saw something in him or he wouldn't have gotten an offer at all.

I think we will know when we start to get some of the higher rated talent from the 757. The #1 2014 in the country plays at Oscar Smith (Chesapeake). Coach Wilder is being more selective in taking 757 talent and from what I hear has narrowed his target list to 5 names, I'm sure one of them is Andrew Brown.

Virginia has been killing it with recruits from this area, but they are not producing, two major recruits have recently left UVA. If we can start to bite into that then we will have major upside.

In Virginia, VT is everywhere. Take a drive around a couple neighborhoods you will see VT flags and stickers on car windows. The top two sellers of college gear at walmart in the Hampton Roads area is VT and ODU. UVA gear is always on clearance

Before Vick, it was UVA everywhere and now VT seems to be hitting the skids. They can be upended just like UVA was.

When ODU expands the stadium, that will have a major impact on recruits. The dream and vision Wilder will be able to sell to these young men.......playing in front of a Sold Out Stadium of 35,000 - 40,000 screaming ODU fans, and even a larger expansion planned for the future (60,000). This will impact who we will retain while recruiting Virginia Football Recruits. The impact on Regional Recruits will be influenced more and more on the perception of a Program that is making a statement about the direction the University is going.

Remember the University has plans to increase enrollment to 30,000 students on or before 2017. We are connecting more and more with Eastern Virginia Medical School and there are rumblings that a merger would be the most beneficial of all alternatives for the region. ODU is one of the largest Research funded programs in the state. This would have a huge impact on the health initiative of Hampton Roads, which already has a $40 million budget/grant with ODU. The university is in the middle of capital improvements, $400 million in new construction, outside of Athletic facilities. ODU is the largest International Research Institution in the State, ahead of UVA and VA Tech, who we share a very distinguished affiliate membership in, as a Carnage Research Institution. ODU's, financial impact on the state and the region has infused over a Billion dollars back into the economy of Hampton Roads every year.

We have become more than a blimp on ESPN's target market regions. They have recognized the area as a AAA market for national and major sport event viewer destinations. Listed as one of the top 10 markets because of multiple indicators for ratings.

ODU is headed in the right direction

I see where you live in Great Bridge... The Wal-Mart in GB (Grassfield) is always selling out of the ODU hats. I purchased 7 or 8 for a group, went back to get more, they were gone. Talked to the Store Manager, he said "I'm not the one that orders, but I will try to get more". He was kind enough to call me when they got more. I went in about 2 days after the call...... they were SOLD OUT.

I think this was good news (just not for me).

Not to say what direction this will go, but there has been a new dialogue opened about ODU again.

Correct, EVMC is "trying" to merge with W&M.

"If the schools decide to proceed, a merger would require approval of the General Assembly and the governor.

"The fact that one of the oldest, most prestigious colleges in the country would consider affiliating with us speaks volumes about the groundbreaking work our faculty, staff and students are achieving every day," EVMS President Harry T. Lester said in an email to faculty, staff and students. "While we won't know for some time how this will work out, I think this is a tremendous compliment and an opportunity worth exploring." ...

The announcement drew a quick response from EVMS' neighbor in Norfolk, Old Dominion University. ODU President John Broderick sent a message to his campus that said "broadening the discussion to include Old Dominion and others would add value for the best interests of the region and the commonwealth."

He noted that in the last legislative session, Del. Johnny S. Joannou, D-Portsmouth, proposed a study, which was tabled, on the feasibility of a merger between EVMS and ODU."

http://www.timesdispatch.com/news/w-m-an...a1afb.html

With money so tight in Virginia, I can't see the Commonwealth wanting to fund another school. JMHO.

By the way, I believe UVA; VA Tech and VCU have the largest research programs in the Commonwealth. What is the size in dollars compared to those major research programs. I believe UVA is the largest, VCU is number two and VA Tech is about $400 million at number 3? I live in the Richmond area and VCU is either the largest or second largest employer after Capital One, not counting the Commonwealth?

Aim High

Did something change with EVMC? EVMC made a big deal out of their decision to be associated with William & Mary.

Yes.........there have been reconsiderations from both sides!

Maybe for total dollars, I was referring to International.....
