If you had to guess what do you think the mix will be for the Orange Bowl? Obviously going to depend on who makes the playoff, how good ND is, etc. But in general over a 6 year period? 1 ND, 3 Big 10, 2 SEC or something like that?
If I am not mistaken ND can basically go only twice in a 12 year period tonthe Orange Bowl and they are still available for selection to the Access Bowls.
And Notre Dame WILL GO as many times as the Bowl can add them. If the Orange Bowl can get them twice in a 12 year period, that's pretty much a guarantee that ND will be in the Orange Bowl twice.

So I guess my question is- will the Big 10 and the SEC appear in the same number of Orange Bowls over the life of the contract, or will the Big 10 appear more often?

Both have to appear a minimum of three times, but if I had to make a guess, I think the SEC has the better chance of appearing more.

The Russell Athletic Bowl will get the ACC's next selection after the Orange Bowl, sources said. The ACC also will have a deal with the Capital One Bowl that will allow the league to replace the Big Ten in the bowl if the Big Ten sends a team to the Orange, where it would play the ACC, a source said. In the Capital One Bowl, the ACC would play a team from the SEC.

Yup, ACC looking pretty damn strong for a "weak P5" conference and I'm being sarcastic when I say weak. If people haven't figured out yet that Power doesn't mean Power on the field tehy're clueless.
Seriously, congrats to UL for getting out of the G5 in the nick of time. Y'all deserve it.
Exactly....we figured it out in the old BIG EAST...on the field held up very well against the other BCS Leagues...still didn't save it AQ status...the MWC/AAC Deserve better and I hope @ least you guys get separation from the other GoF leagues...
I credit UL and their fanbase for one thing above all else in the past 15-20 years. They learned that the future of college sports is all about $$$$$$ and they made it happen. It's hard for anybody (UL haters and all) to argue with that and their fanbase responded, stepped up to build a legitimate powerhouse athletic department.

In the 12 years of the contract, the OB will be a semifinal 4 times, an SEC/ACC game 3 times minimum, and an B1G/ACC game 3 times minimum. That leaves 2 other games, which could be any one of ND, SEC, or B1G vs ACC. If I had to guess, I'd say ND gets it once (if not twice) and the SEC gets the final opening.

I think that's a special case, though, because of the way ECU Pirate Nation HATE HATE HATES the ACC. Yes, you would crawl over broken glass to see ECU take on a 6-6 Wake Forest or Syracuse in a bowl game. But what about a 6-6 Minnesota, Miss. State, Kansas, Arizona State? Would you rather see a 9-3 ECU play one of those, or play a 10-3 Toledo?

1. SEC
2. B1G
3a. ACC
3b. Big XII
5. Pac 12
The Big 12 has better top to bottom ties than the ACC, because of the Sugar tie.
Other than that, you are correct, and the rank-order is the same as during the BCS era.
Total...the difference is the Sugar Bowl is the #2/3 SEC School vs the Orange Bowl with the #3/4 SEC/#2 B1G or Notre Dame...they are virtally tied especially going down the list and when the Sun Bowl is your #6 that is a overall strong lineup.
If you go by Tiers it something like this
Tier 1
SEC/B1G
Tier 2
ACC/Big XII
Tier 3
Pac 12
Group of Five totally screwed...
Yes, going by tiers, I agree with you.

If you are asking my opinion then it's maybe. If you are asking for the general ECU fan feeling then it's no doubt the bad P5 school. The average ECU fan struggles to even really care about playing our league opponents. ECU fans have never really identified with playing most of the current G5 schools, because other than the ones we've shared a league with we don't play them. I can't even remember the last G5 OOC series we have played outside of Navy.

The Orange Bowl deal does not give the OB any discretion with regards to Notre Dame: The Irish can only go a maximum of twice in the 8 years that the OB does not host a playoff game, but there is no minimum number of times they must appear, it could be zero times. And the Irish only go to the OB if they are higher-ranked than the highest-ranked available SEC and B1G teams.

That is ok. ND just needs to make sure that they are higher ranked than those schools at least twice in eight years...or in the playoffs...or in the Cap One Bowl or the Russell Athletic Bowl or any other ACC bowl.
Life is much better for ND (in their view) as a football indy with a tie in to the playoffs and the ACC bowls than any other available option.

RE: B1G adds Holiday and Kraft Fight Hunger Bowls ...
From the bowl's persective, the bowl hierachy looks something like (all numbers post playoff tie-in):
1. Rose (Big 10 #1 vs PAC-12 #1)
2. Sugar (SEC #1 vs Big 12 #1)
3. Orange (Big 10/SEC #2 vs ACC #1)
4. Capital One (Big 10 #2 or 3/ACC #2 vs SEC #2 or 3)
5. Alamo (Big 12 #2 vs PAC-12 #2)
6. Outback (Big 10 #3 versus SEC #3 or 4)
7. Russell Athletic (Big 12 #3 versus ACC #2 or 3)
8. Holiday (PAC-12 #3 versus Big 10 #4)
Even those "tie-ins" are probably flexible for the SEC and Big 10 after the top couple, and will only get more mixed up year to year, since leagues will look for more variety.
