flying is flying + big 12 school's get to sell alumni packages to hawaii every other year.

the big 12 would never invite schools as a "football only" partner.

Too far away and in the wrong direction. Bowlsby has already said that if/when they expand it will be to the east for denser population and to bridge the gap to WVU.

This is an interesting point. The current population center of this nation is in Texas County, Missouri:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mean_center...population

The population center is slowly drifting towards the geographic center in Smith County, Kansas. This is a 200+ year trend that is likely to continue.

The B12 straddles the center. They could go either east or west. If they lean east, they will compete with 3 other elite conferences for half of the nation's population. If they lean west, they will compete with 1 elite conference for half of the nation's population.

The knock on western states is that they have small populations. Fair enough. But consider the highest-growth states:

http://www.cgpgrey.com/blog/united-state...-2010.html

The top 4 are Nevada, Arizona, Utah & Idaho. Add Colorado, which has a higher rate of growth than Florida. Those 5 states combined equal the population of Florida.

FWIW, I doubt the B12 is expanding anytime soon. I'm just skeptical of the conventional wisdom that favors an eastern strategy for the TV markets. Heck, the MWC might even get the upper hand on the AAC. Especially if they ever get back into Texas.

TV markets don't mean much if you have no means to monetize them. You need a conference cable network to do that. Temple University is in a huge city. Does adding that school to the Big 12 increase the per-team revenue? Not in the least. There seems to be very little interest among Big 12 message board posters about the need for a conference cable channel. I hope the school adminstrators and conference officials are working on it. The ACC has recognized the necessity of a "ACCN".
Texas doesn't worry about TV revenue. They have money arriving by the carload. But the other schools better find a way to build one.
To me, this also means that the the conference should expand by adding th two best TV markets available: San Diego and San Jose, the second and third largest cities in CA. These two schools have unspectacular athletic departments. They will need to step it up. But these cities are huge, affluent markets chock full of cable boxes.
Tell yourself all of the reasons that these two are unacceptable. Then ask youself how thw Big 12 is going to keep up with the money chase against the other P5 conferences.

Why, because that wouldn't help your school? It would be the path of least resistance to invite BYU and Boise State for football-only. Boise puts their olympic sports in the WAC and BYU stays put in the WCC. The Big XII simultaneously adds football prowess without taking away money from the league. Boise has proven over and over they are the kings of the G5.

If they remain kings of the G5, they have an easy path to the access bowls. In the Big 12, they would likely get there only rarely.

If the Big 12 could get Boise and BYU on the cheap - that is, for less than a full share for the long term (not just transitionally), it would make sense for the league. $10-12 million a year to each would probably be enough to both avoid diluting the per team payout they currently enjoy and also persuade the two new schools to take the deal.
