Correct. Texas, like some other states (CO, TN & AR are 1st to come to mind) has multiple public U systems.

Each system has it's flagship. Colorado State, my wife's alma mater, is the flagship of the Colorado State University System. I wish we had multiple systems in NC.

In all seriousness, what happens if we expand to 60k and fill the stadium?? Isn't that pretty hard to overlook by all of the other major conferences?
It certainly doesn't hurt. It's easier to expand & grow a program on the field than it is to improve academics significantly. BUT..... It's got a LOT to do with academics. Terry Holland told me once that the best thing ECU could do to position itself was to improve it's academic standing if we want in a better conference. It's just the way it is since the egghead presidents are the one's making the call.
Look at what's left in CUSA. There's only 1 national university left, Rice. Tulsa left CUSA specifically for being with similar academic institutions even after the crappy AAC TV deal was revealed.

You don't need multiple systems to have multiple flagships.
Cal and UCLA. FSU and UF are declared the state's only two "pre-eminent universities". Both examples come from within the same "system".

I think the talk of ECU needing to change it's name from a directional to something else might be more correct than most of us would like to admit considering how superficial that is.

You sure are a bitter little man
While I see an argument for ECU, he is right. SEC is after the UNC's and Virginia's... right or wrong.

Disagree, what about Auburn? The "flagship" is Alabama, what about Miss. St.? The "flagship" I guess, would be Ole' Miss, but that is still a stretch, they both have about the same suckage,...ole miss and miss st i mean,
if you ask me auburn and miss st are just parasites to the conference because there whiners felt they deserved an invite and the state government I suppose helped get the both of them in?
Auburn and Mississippi State are CHARTER members of the SEC. Nobody ever "invited" them, as they helped found the conference.
Since the founding, the SEC's policy has been clear: It invites flagships. The only imaginable exceptions would be for top-tier private schools that have the status and resources of state flagships, such as a Duke or a Notre Dame.
No offense intended, but ECU isn't anything close to a flagship. Neither is my USF for that matter.
Is Texas A & M the flagship school of Texas?
Texas A/M has co-flagship designation by the state legislature, similar to what UCLA has in California. Which makes sense for a school with a $5 billion endowment and land, air, and sea grant status. Even this recent press release by the University of Texas refers to A/M as a flagship:

RE: Opinion on ECU to SEC
It would be a good fit for ECU to go to the SEC. Lord knows the fan support at ECU is there and rivals that of other SEC schools such as Kentucky, however, the SEC can choose almost any school from any league and make a move. ECU would not beat out a school like Virginia or VT or Florida State.

I think if you interviewed 100 randomly selected fans of SEC schools, maybe 2 of them would agree that ECU is a good fit for the conference.

RE: Opinion on ECU to SEC
While I think the SEC should give ECU a look I think some things would happen if it happened:
While arguably being one of the top teams in the state of NC a SEC paycheck would put us #1. The recruiting advantage alone would put us over all the other players such as State, UNC, Duke, and Wake.
ECU football as far as tv market penetration goes would take over the state as ACC football coverage is based more on # of teams in the state from that conference versus tv drawing ability.
ECU baseball, with a SEC invite could move into competitive position pretty fast I think. The facilities are there already.
I think we could pull our weight in basketball.

(07-04-2013 11:18 AM)HP-TBDPITL Wrote: I don't know why this keeps coming up...the SEC doesn't need ECU or UNC or NC State, it already controls North Carolina recruiting in football. The Top 10 players in the state already leave the state...for places like South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee.
What is more likely is that the SEC goes after the Big 12 schools once their GOR expires...a list of potential schools include Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, West Virginia and Texas Tech.
Texas is likely heading to the PAC down the road (in this scenario) and Kansas may be squabbled over by them and the B1G....who knows what happens with TCU, Baylor, K-State and Iowa State.
Well, the SEC is interested in North Carolina for a couple of reasons:
just because we get a lot of recruits from a state outside the footprint doesn't necessarily mean we have a major presence in the state. I refer to Texas A&M as proof of this. The SEC was getting good Texas recruits before the Aggies came in, but the SEC was pretty much ignored in the state of Texas until the Aggies came in. Now a lot of Texans actually follow the SEC. Also, the SEC is looking to improve academics. Both Texas A&M and Missouri have very strong academics, and the current president at UF wants more of them. Academics mean a lot to UF too, not just Vandy!! Even the rest of the SEC has become tired as being paraded around as the poster child for uneducated athletes. What do UNC, NCSU, & Duke offer in addition to lousy football? Great academics, more markets (the SEC has nothing in the Tidewater area and a very small presence, if that, in Raleigh-Durham), and great basketball. Basketball is a sport that the SEC has been working on upgrading. It's been a slow process, but Kentucky has had to actually work for its conference championships now as opposed to in the past where the conference just mailed it in to UK.

Texas has a tiered academic system system for public universities. U Texas, and TAMU are the only two recognized as research universities. The second tier called emerging research universities include Houston, Tech, State, UTA, UTEP, UNT, and ootsa.
If a university reaches certain benchmarks it can move up in the system and be considered a flagship in a research (but not historical) sense. So far H town and tech are the closest.

RE: Opinion on ECU to SEC
Pretty much, its not that ECU is an awful candidate, its that they are behind a LOT of other schools on the list of "Who the SEC really wants to add for expansion"
And the SEC has the luxury of not having to go that far down its list. If #1-4 are not willing/able then there's no need to go on to #5-10 because there is no need to expand.
Expansion for the SEC at this point is an unnecessary luxury that will only happen if a very few select ACC teams from NC/VA decide they want to join the SEC.
