RE: McMurphy - Boise and SDSU glad they didn't stick around AAC
The edge the AAC has over CUSA/SBC is tradition.

Almost every school in the AAC has at one point in time participated in one of the 6 CFP bowls. Its a set of schools that have been considered major for a long period of time, though there is no national powers.

If Florida State and Clemson joined the AAC it would be a legit contract bowl conference with a few powers while the others are not much different than the rank and file ACC schools, athletically and academically.

Some on here argue that the AAC is no different than CUSA/SBC because of a common footprint. 1/3 of the AAC is out of that footprint completely (UC, UConn, Temple, Navy). The budgets in the AAC are all higher than what is found in the CUSA/SBC too.

I would not be surprised if the CFP expanded to 8 bowls during the next cycle and added the AAC as a floater contract league.

You could also add that while there are not national powers in football, UConn, Cincinnati, Memphis, Temple and Houston have the basketball banners that most schools only dream of.

Back on topic, Boise State and SDSU did the right thing for their overall athletic programs. If a national best of the rest all sports conference came calling then Boise and SDSU would be locks for a western division. Until that day comes splitting up their sports doesn't really help them.

With Boise and San Diego State staying in The MWC, Craig Thompson got what he wanted: mediocrity. He convinced Boise to stay by giving them more money and made SDSU think they had no place else to go. The reality is if Boise and SDSU would have stayed in The AAC it would have killed The MWC. As it is The MWC continues to be a conference with a teams stretching from Colorado to Hawaii with lukewarm support. The AAC is clearly a better conference in eastern media markets.

The AAC has better FB/BB tradition and attendance than the MWC.

The MWC is basically the old WAC now + MWC deadweight. People keep focusing on the fact that is has Boise State but they are very unlikely to repeat the run they made in the 5 years from 08' to 12'. They will probably be more like BYU in the future, good for 10 wins a year but not a title contender.

Why not? They still have Petersen as coach, who is better by far than any G5 coach out there.

Its difficult for any program to duplicate what Boise State did during that run. I see Boise State good for two to three losses a year because the schedule is going to get more difficult for them. One thing going for them is that they are in the weaker or the two divisions but they still have to get through a championship game every season plus their non-conference schedules look a bit stronger on average than they used to be.

They've found it a tougher road since joining the MWC. They have not gone undefeated in league play yet and haven't won a single outright league title.

Make sure it happens on 09/21/13. However, don't let Miami keep it as close as last year’s game—52-14:

That's more than they would have earned in the AAC and they done have the extensive travel and they don't throw their Olympic sports under a bus. Keep in mind, Boise was going to have to pay about 900K in travel subsidies a year just to be in the modest little Big West conference. The move to stay in the MW makes a lot of sense for them regardless of the final bowl outcome.

SDSU doesn't get as much of a financial boost, but they probably are better off too--especially if the AAC wasn't going to add anymore western teams.

To me, Boise would have only been worth the add if they had brought Seattle along as member #12 to fully open up the northwest.

Boise was originally to rejoin the WAC. After that option crumbled in front of them they turned towards the Big West. Nobody really wanted them to come back. We only agreed to take Boise in because they were willing to pay the travel subs - a burden that they brought onto themselves when you consider the supposed financial windfall of BE football money and reneging on the WAC. Boise's commitment issues resulted in a $1.5 million exit fee from the Big West. To their credit, they paid it immediately without complaints.

The conference by and large did well in making sure it got something out of the deal with the unholy partnership. We ended up $3 million richer for our troubles in dealing with Boise and SDSU.

Now that Boise and SDSU are staying in the Mountain, I hope the BW adds Denver in the near future. Of course the most likely add will be Bakersfield instead 03-banghead

yeah well i wonder how BSU feels about that 5 mill big east exit fee that they have to pay......

(this program could barely afford the 1.5 mill from the last conference they left)

lol....I think the lawsuit Boise filed that says they shouldn't have to pay the 5 million dollar BE/AAC exit fee tells you a lot about how Boise feels.

Give Petersen credit for toughening up their non-con games. Boise now has BYU plus at least one "contract conference" team on their schedule every year through 2023.

RE: McMurphy - Boise and SDSU glad they didn't stick around AAC
I think as much as is being made about Boise and SDSU being "happy" about not being part of the American, I honestly think Aresco is just as happy. Think about it, Marianatto was the idiot that made the invitations to Boise and subsequently SDSU. Boise was always simply a "football team" that looked good to have on the conference slate in the face of the impending doom of the Big East's AQ status. SDSU was just thrown a bone because Boise looked awfully silly on a complete Western island, and nobody else left in the MWC was worth anything more to the Big East. When AQ went out the window, then the Boise/Big East(American) marriage lost its purpose for both sides. Boise didn't have the AQ assurance it was looking for in going out East, and the Big East didn't have a use for a team 3k miles from the HQ without the AQ assurance. If I'm a UConn/Temple/USF fan, I am feeling great about not having to fly wayyyy out West for a conference game against a team my fans know little about other than recent years (Boise) or care little about (SDSU). C'mon, anybody really believe that SDSU is going inspire fans in Tampa or Orlando or Cincinnati to attend a game? Boise is a good program, but they are still at the development stage where one 8-4 season snaps their appeal to anyone outside the Rockies, which is pretty much the entire American Athletic Conference.

Boise played in the Hawaii Bowl less than 4 weeks after playing @Hawaii in a reg-season game in 2007. I remember being shocked that WAC expected/required them to do that, because Nevada was also bowl-eligible and played Hawaii at home that year.

His hate doesn't have anything to do with ESPN, although that's certainly not helping things. He has a personal problem with USF from his time working in Tampa, and he's gone out of his way even before he joined ESPN to run down USF at any opportunity.
