"The American Athletic Conference is going to be a very strong conference for us. It's certainly better than where we were," said Terry Holland, Former ECU Athletic Director. "We got a lot of mileage out of C-USA, but C-USA continued to hemmorage members."

Yes, it would be a bit surprising for a current Athletic Director to tell so much of the truth ... but probably less surprising for a "former Athletic Director" to do so.

Honest question, but do you really think this was "bad mouthing" CUSA? By pursuing a conference change, it would be assumed/publicly known that he/ECU thought the AAC was better. And the quote implies that one reason was because of the changing membership. I don't quite read that as disrespectful.

No, not really, Holland has had a tendency to put his foot in his mouth at times in the past, but in this case it pretty clear who he/ECU thinks the AAC is the better conference is in terms of them moving and paying entry/exit fees.

What?

"Better than where we were."

Where "was" ECU? In a conference with Memphis, UCF, SMU, Houston, Tulsa, Tulane. Where are they going? To a conference with Memphis, UCF, SMU, Houston, Tulsa, Tulane. Is the AAC better than the new C-Belt? Yes, but Holland is using past tense. In reality, the AAC is the old CUSA.

ECU and the others just moved the stay the same. And that's better than falling behind, but not better than before.

But USF, UConn, Navy, Cinci, and Temple were not in CUSA. Also CUSA didn't get 2 million a year in media (I know, 2 million sucks too, but it more than they were getting). Additionally, the coverage (90% of all football games on ESPN/ESPN2/ABC/ESPN-U) is a significant improvement.

^ This. It's laughable that some people are so dead set on fitting a square peg into a round hole.

Pretty crafty how Holland pushed for & loaded up C-USA with nearby Eastern schools to ECU, while plotting ECU to another conference all along.
Some people would call it acting dishonorably with dubious intentions, but if the other schools let him, hey - more power to him.

I agree with your point about more coverage. But 3 of the 5 teams you mentioned were at one time CUSA members themselves.

As I mentioned in an unrelated thread, I think the American would have been better off with fewer CUSA additions.

And pulled from where exactly? Their western division of Boise State and SJSU was toast. You really think MAC and Sun Belt schools were on the radar?

Irrelevant. USF, UC, etc. recruited at a BCS level for a decade, so the fact that they used to be CUSA members at one time is totally irrelevant. They recruited as BCS teams for a decade, played BCS teams for a decade, and in some cases performed like a BCS team for a decade. It's not like they just came from CUSA. These teams were BE members, not CUSA. Houston/SMU were once SWC members also, but this is also irrelevant today. Tulane and Georgia Tech were in the SEC...again irrelevant.

I was simply pointing out that these teams were not part of the 2005-2012 version of CUSA. Clearly, there are some similarities--but almost HALF the membership is different.

Plus, to be fair, there was to be 3 more teams that were supposed to be part of the AAC that were not CUSA (Boise, SDSU, and another MW addition). That part just didn't work out.

Is it really that controversial to say that the conference that took 9 teams from CUSA is a better place than the left over CUSA?

It's also no secret that ECU wanted out of CUSA to rejoin with some old conference foes. They have been angling for an invite since UC, UofL, and USF joined The BEast...

ECU finally got the invite. It's a pity it was too late to help them do much more than make a small advancement on the Red Queen's racetrack...
