However, since it was, what are the states that have the most separation between the "flagship" school and the rest of the schools in the state? This question is for Kittonhead, but because it was split all others can chime in......damn, I feel like I'm in Vegas again!
WVU - Big XII
Marshall - CUSA
Everyone other school in WV is in either Division II or III...
WVU is a run of the mill P5 school while Marshall is an upper tier G5. WVU has played in Huntington before.

WVU to Marshall is about the same gap between Kentucky and Louisville. Due to this neither West Virginia or Kentucky are states with the most separation.
I wouldn't call WVU a run of the mill P5 school, considering we have a 3-0 record in BCS bowls. How many other run of the mill schools have as many BCS bowl wins?

If you aren't an average P5 program at WVU what you are contending is that you are a Top 15 mega football power. Even though WVU has that 3-0 bowl record a Top 15 recruiting program it is not.

What is Utah's record in BCS bowl games 2-0? Does anyone consider Utah a top tier P5? Hardly.

WVU has only had 2 top 15 recruiting classes in our history, and both were the result of ONE 5* recruit (Gwaltney and Devine). IMO all recruiting services put way too much emphasis on 5* recruits, when nearly half of them never pan out like people expect. So dream on, Alice...

And that mighty 60,000 seat Mountaineer Field.....60,000 is an average P5 capacity. When you hit 80k+ then you're more in the elite.

Again.......
In your opinion, what are the other states like Kentucky where there is a clear hierarchy? Please list your 15 top football mega power.

The largest city in the State of West Virginia is Milan Puskar Stadium on a WVU football weekend. I bet you'd give your left nut to see the same kind of crowd in Athens...

BTW, I'll bet you didn't know I was born in Athens while my father was at OU working on his Masters in Journalism. I know the town well... 04-cheers

I've always thought it was too bad the two schools have never been able to get together in the same conference.

If you haven't been in recent years the campus environment has now evolved into more of a football school. Uptown Buffalo Wings and Rings is only a 5 minute walk to the stadium and packed with football fans every Saturday. The culture has definitely changed.

RE: [split] Kentucky's athletic hierarchy
I'm just glad they restored the Elm trees on the main drag through the campus. I was sick when the original Elms caught the Dutch Elm disease and had to be cut down. Driving down that green tunnel was very impressive and beautiful. It gave the campus a very unique look...

Now, can we get this thread back on topic? Do you know any other states where the school hierarchy is as stratified as KY or WV?

Kentucky and West Virginia don't have super stratified hierarchy. Try Hawaii and Maine if you want to see what real stratification does.

Let's try to find a state that is "like" Kentucky if there is one.

1) Georiga (SEC)
2) Georiga Tech (ACC)
3) Georiga Southern (SBC)
4) Georgia State (SBC)
5) Mercer (Southern)
6) Kennesaw State (Atlantic Sun)
5) Savannah State (MEAC)

That might be as close to Kentucky as what I've been able to find. As far as West Virginia, Arkansas might be the best comparison.

1) Arkansas (SEC)
2) Arkansas State (SBC)
3) Central Arkansas (Southland)

At least in terms of football Arkansas is similar with a P5 and G5 sharing one state which is relatively uncommon.
