The five most insufferable fanbases in college football
The five most insufferable fanbases in college football

Some fans are better than others. Some fans just think they are.

There are some excellent fanbases in college football. There are also some not so excellent.

The difference between dedicated and insufferable is minute and while the teams below belong decidedly to the latter category, that doesn’t make them bad fans. It makes them intolerable fans. On gameday, intolerable isn’t a terrible thing. However, in the day-to-day, these fanbases are doing too much.

Some fans are better than others. Some fans just think they are …

Notre Dame

Notre Dame fans think they should win every year. Why? Because they’re Notre Dame, of course. The entitlement is a little sickening. Remember the last time Notre Dame won a national title? Reagan was President and U2 was relevant. It’s been a minute or two, and every year the Irish are still oversold due to the fact that they’re the Irish. Notre Dame fans are not good.

Miami (Fla.)

U! Tha U! U — are obnoxious. Super obnoxious. They don’t show up for games. They stammer on and on about their program’s history, even if the Hurricanes were a laughingstock prior to 1980. They’re still the best program in college football – just ask ‘em. This year’s team is the best in country. If you think otherwise, well, you’re stupid. Sure, there are a select few capable of supporting the Hurricanes like responsible adults. The rest are pretty much Miami Heat fans.

Ohio State and Penn State (tie)

Two Big Ten fan bases that stuff their stadiums without fail. You have to respect that. And we do. We respect you, Buckeye and Nittany Lion fans. But heaven help you if you should disagree with Penn State or Ohio State — excuse me, THE Ohio State — fans. Should you cross them, they’ll will be forced to throw a flaming tire at you, or toss a few full beers in your direction, or just berate you incessantly until you enter another zip code.

Arkansas

Arkansas has the sort of fan base that performs Freedom of Information Act requests to check on any correspondence between a coach (Houston Nutt) and a female booster. That’s not nice. Arkansas also has the sort of fan base that goes from love to like to a degree of dislike with a new coach (Bret Bielema) in the span of five SEC games. It’s not easy being an Arkansas fan. That’s no excuse.

Colorado

It’s really pretty in Boulder, Colo., which might be why Colorado fans haven’t attended home games with any reliability in a decade. When fans do stock the place and the Buffaloes start to lose, they tend to disappear somewhere in the second quarter. Fortunately, they don’t play games on April 20 because the fans wouldn’t show up at all.

Insufferable mentions: Pretty much the whole Pac-12.
