Down on the Team
I'm really down on the team this year. Does anybody else feel this way?

The defense has been a constant struggle. They seem to have improved, but I'm really worried that GT is going to run all over them next week. GT is not Navy. We'll be lucky to beat Navy today.

I don't have much confidence in Savage. I'm not calling for a backup because I don't even have confidence in them at this point. I like Savage better than Sunseri, but he still doesn't seem to make the plays I would expect from a good college QB. I'm not even sure he's average.

Bennett has had two big weeks here running the football, and I don't think he's anything special. We've been spoiled by great running backs the last few years. He's just not it.

I think we need to get Boyd the ball more. He's the biggest playmaker we have on the team. I don't think Chryst does a good enough job game planning to get him the ball.

Chryst's play calling is average. I think he can and will do better in the future.

RE: Down on the Team
It's hard to figure out this team. They certainly still look sloppy in many aspects of the game. Savage is exactly what folks who saw him at practice earlier this year said he was going to be.

Chryst helps in planning but Rudolph is calling the plays, I believe.

The D is going to be tested next week for sure.

Let's see where the team ends up. I still think the goal is 6-6 with an outside chance at 7-5. It would be tough to finish 1-4 (for 6-6) but maybe they can sneak up on someone.

Let's see what happens the rest of the year but this game was disappointing. They really need to get to 6 wins.

I really have a hard time believing they could only score 21 today with only two TDs.

The game today was just miserable. I wrote this post at halftime but thought they'd end up pulling it out in the second half. It was just a lackluster game after halftime.

Agreed ndlutz. I thought they would pull out this game too. Give credit to Navy, they didn't quit and came back to win.

I give a lot of credit to Navy and their coach whose name I can't spell correctly. They have a game plan and they stick with it. They win football games that way. Life for coaches at the academies is certainly not easy when they're trying to win football games. Also - a lot of credit is due to their QB who was clearly playing through injury.

RE: Down on the Team
I'm not as down on the team as most. This is what most of us have expected at this point. The rest of our ACC games are as winnable as they are lose-able. I don't expect us to lose the rest of the way. I still think we'll end up in a bowl game.

Today, I thought the defense played fine, for the most part. I still don't understand how our DB's were playing 10 yards off the LOS. I can understand playing far off the LOS against teams w/ WR's capable of beating us deep, but not Navy. Members of this board can catch 5-6 catches on our defense. Not saying we can't get hurt by a DB destroying us, but just saying.

Offensive playcalling seemed weird today. On a couple of occasions we had 2nd down and 3 (or less) multiple times and we ran the ball. Why not take a shot down the field in those situations. The OL is an absolute mess right now. It's still young, but we can't make the young excuse much longer. They've had 7 games to start gelling as a unit. My #1 problem with Savage is that it just seems like he eyes down his WR's too long, and it doesn't seem like he uses all of his weapons in his arsenal. Conner and Bennett are what they are. They're average at best college RB's. Good thing is that Conner is a freshman w/ lots of time in front of him.

RE: Down on the Team
You're right on Savage. I don't think that mentally, he gets "it." We saw the same thing with Tino but Savage obviously has a lot more physical talent. He seems to want to go one place with the ball per play. If it's not there, he's starting to run instead of trying to find secondary receivers. He just doesn't seem to go through his progression. I thought there were a couple times yesterday where he just took off running instead of looking to make a play with his arm. He's not a scrambler. Unless he knew nobody would get open, he should have just cut to the sideline and tried to milk it and wait for somebody to get open and then throw it out of bounds if that didn't happen. Instead, he just ran. I don't get it.

I kept waiting for the play action calls. We were killing Navy with the run. We could have made them way off balance with a few play action passes to stretch the field. Instead, we just ran ran ran. It didn't make much sense. When we finally went to play action, we had a TD drive with Savage's throw to Street. Even on that drive, the play calling was weird. It was like we ran until they stopped us and then ran play action until that didn't work. There didn't seem to be a flow or reason to it.

RE: Down on the Team
I'm still amazed at how many people want House gone. FSU is scoring mad points on everybody, and Duke seems to be more of an aberration than anything. We've held just about every school on the schedule below their average scores a game, including GT today. I'm not saying he's the second coming of Buddy Ryan either. I think people had an predetermined hatred of him from the start and isn't letting it go. Hell I didn't like the hire or the way it was done either, but I'm at least willing to give House a chance. He definitely has improved as a DC since week 1 and there has been a drastic improvement since the Duke game. The fact is we're giving up 18.2 points per game since Duke.

The anger should be pointed in the direction of the offense. But at the same time the offense is really young, especially up front and at RB. What baffles my ass is when people say Voytik should get PT. Do people really want to see Voytik run for his life. I'm not saying Savage will get us another W this season, just that playing Voytik will do more harm than good, at this point. The lack of a running threat doesn't help matters. We're consistently in 3rd and long situations where defenses just T off on Savage.

They need to win 2 to make a bowl game. They really need it for the extra practice. I hope they can do it.

I'll be off the Pitt MBs again this week until Thursday or Friday. I can already predict what the threads will be like. 03-banghead

It's a clusterf*ck as usual Iberian....

Another stat to point to; Pitt's offense has scored 17.8 PPG since the Duke game.

I'm not really surprised by that stat. Watching the games you can see that Savage gets no time. Obviously, if he gets time he can really sling the ball. The OL isn't getting any push for a running game.

The first half against GT was a nightmare. I was debating whether to watch theh 2nd half or goto bed.

Here's the most disappointing thing for me is that we had no answer for #45. We didn't provide help for DoJo at all. Plus there was 0 creativity on offense. Use a screen pass. What about a shuffle pass? Do something to get and keep the defense off balance for ***** sake.

RE: Down on the Team
I definitely thought about a screen pass too. I was screaming for them to do it on several occastions. IT's interested because they seemed to use it a lot more last year?

In the 2nd half, it looked like the O was trying to help out on #45 using a RB or others on diferent sets to chip him on the outside. He was killing them on the speed rush to the outside in the 1st half.

Like I said, it did look like they make some adjustments coming out in the 2nd half but they just didn't make the key plays when they needed to. I kept thinking when they were driving several times after it was 14-10 that they would get a FG or something out of it but the drive would stall and then they would have to punt.

I really hope the team finishes strong on and off the field because I wonder the effect it will have on recruiting if they go 5-7 or even 4-8. Yikes!

RE: Down on the Team
For us to win, we gotta win a 20-14 type of game or a game like Virginia. I think all of our games are still winnable, but as we saw these past two games we could easily finish 4-8. 5-7 seems the most realistic right now.
