How many bowl eligible teams will there be?
So I got bored today and looked at everyone who still has a shot at bowl eligibility. These are just my opinion but here is how many schools will likely be bowl eligible.

ACC - 9
AAC - 5
Big Ten - 7 (penn st. Ineligible)
Big 12 - 7
C-USA - 7 (UTSA 5-7, while FAU gets to 6-6)
Indy - 3
MAC - 6
MWC - 7
PAC 12 - 9
SEC - 11
Sun Belt - 6

That's is 77 bowl eligible teams. The only conferences that won't fill their bowl slots IMO are the Big Ten because of Penn St., the AAC (because it sucks, j/k), and the Big 12 because they will send an extra school to the BCS. That would leave 2 MAC, 1 C-USA, 1 MWC, 4 Sun Belt, 1 PAC 12 and Norte Dame trying to get into the final three spots. Notre Dame will go somewhere they just confuse me with their bowl tie-ins/Big East/ACC relationships so one spot is gone.

That leaves 2 for 9 schools. Whoever the left out PAC 12 school is, probably Utah, will get a spot. That leaves 8 schools for one spot, those 8 could look something like this: Toledo, BGSU, FAU, Colorado St., WKU, Texas St., Troy, and Arkansas St. The last opening for a bowl could be the BoB Bowl or the Pizza Bowl. If its the Pizza bowl the MAC already has a school in it so Toledo and BGSU are out, so the look for WKU to get picked due to location. If it's the BoB bowl FAU is out because of another C-USA school already playing in it, so WKU might be in luck since in 2004 Marshall had no bowl opportunities due to the MAC only having 2 spots, but C-USA helped us get the spot to play Cincinnati in the Armed Forces Bowl since we were joining the conference the next year. Don't know if that would happen but very well could.

Just my opinion on a lazy day off.

ND has no bowl tie ins if they don't finish Top 14. They would automatically get snatched up by any bowl with an opening.

According to their site they have some form of relationship with the Sun Bowl and the Russell Athletic Bowl (formerly Champs Sports). But yes as I said they will go somewhere.

My own analysis landed somewhere pretty close to yours. The 75-80 team range is almost a certainty, with about 3-4 extra slots for the at large teams. ACC will be key for any extra CUSA/MAC/SBC schools, as they have a shot at having a few extra teams.

Russell can only take them once every 4 years. They were just in that bowl 2 years ago so they can't go back yet.

Thanks for doing all the work, that paints a clearer picture of anything I have read or saw...I think if WKU gets a bowl we have to win out and I am not sure we will.....

As a WKU Fan I would hope to go to Florida vs. driving in a blizzard again like last season to Detroit...But I do know the pIzza Bowl was impressed with WKU's attendance to Detroit last year, but I would think it would be a lot less with the newness of the first bowl gone this season...

Still a lot of football left to be played but I agree a lot more teams are going to be bowl elig. vs the last 2 seasons...

Briefly looking over the remaining 4-5 win teams (and a few 3), it appears that there could be anywhere between 68-78ish teams eligible. I'd meet in the middle and say around 72-74. These things tend to work themselves out.
