I've always wondered what's held Army back while Air Force and Navy seem to have some sort of modest success most years.
Since 9/11 it has been the promise of a ground assignment in Afghanistan or Iraq immediately following graduation. Those Air Force and Navy graduates just don't get those kinds of up close and personal opportunities unless they are special forces. Believe me that is a tough obstacle for Army to overcome right now.

When you hire a guy with that name at this time of year, you better bring a pear tree to the press conference.

If O'Brien leaves, then maybe Al Golden to Penn St and you'd have Texas and Miami searching at the same time . . .

Surprised this is not posted since the top posting on this page is Dec 24th.

UMass Going Big Time

Quote:What is startling is that UMass would pay a reported $836,000 of buyout money to jettison a coach of any sport. Mark down Dec. 26, 2013 as the real date the history of FBS football at UMass began.

At other universities, pompous millionaire alums normally pool their riches, call the athletic director and say they'll pay to buy out a losing coach. UMass alums have been known to make such demands, especially in basketball, and then expect the university or the state's taxpayers to foot the cost.

This time, UMass AD John McCutcheon said the buyout will be paid by "external'' sources. It's not clear what that means, though it's being interpreted in some quarters to suggest UMass might have some of those deep-pocketed alums as well.

Here is Matty Vautour article from the Hampshire Gazette.

RE: 2013 Coaching Carousel
There ought to be at least two more NFL head coaching positions open this week, to tempt the college guys with NFL ambitions.

I doubt that Cleveland or Washington will hire a college coach, but some of the other possible NFL openings (Oakland, Tennessee) might go to a college coach.

This might mean that Mike Munchak is getting the Penn State job.

Al Golden is staying at #Miami ending #PennState speculation.

EDIT: Tonight's rumor is that Penn State is going to hire James Franklin and announce it on Monday.

RE: 2013 Coaching Carousel
Quote:Current Western Kentucky and former Louisville coach Bobby Petrino interviewed Tuesday with Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich for the head-coaching job at the school, a source told ESPN's Brett McMurphy.

Stanford defensive coordinator Derek Mason, Michigan State defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi and Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris also are among the six individuals who interviewed for the job, a source said.

Current Louisville offensive coordinator Shawn Watson and defensive coordinator Vance Bedford interviewed as well, according to a source.

Petrino is one of three finalists to replace Charlie Strong, a source told McMurphy. The other two finalists are unknown, a source said.

An announcement on Strong's successor could come as early as Thursday morning, when the University of Louisville Athletic Association is scheduled to meet to review Jurich's recommendation for the position.
