Marshall fans, are you worried about losing Doc soon?
What Doc has done at Marshall in terms of recruiting is eye opening.. As a sports fan you have to be impressed with how he has been able to lure so many Florida kids to Marshall. I don't ever remember Marshall, at least while on Conf USA, being this competitive.

So the question is this, how long does get stay? I have got to think that larger schools are taking notice of his ability to recruit. Any rumors about his leaving? If not Marshall seems to me to have the potential to dominate Conf USA as long as he stays.

Success will equate to money.

Money will equate to a salary increase.

Pay increase will equate to longevity.

He's from the area and isn't too young. The only school I could see him leaving for is wvu and I don't think holgerson gets fired this season

I really don't know. Doc's recruiting ability has been known for decades and in 35 years of coaching no one ever gave him a shot. He was never even an OC or DC. People knew what he did well and let him have the time to do it.

It's possible someone comes after him, but my guess would be that it would happen after next season. Doc knows he will be loaded next year and if he gets offers this year he'll get better offers next year.

think WVU would want to hire from "little brother" anyway? Maybe they have in the past, I don't know the history there.

I don't think so. I think more likely is a contract extension from Marshall...which I would support.

Florida/GA/VA kids are who MU in the past recruited under Pruitt and what made up our rosters when the herd was good. Snyder just recruited a different type of player than what our program was used to: heavier, slower, more powerful and better against the run. And we were going into CUSA, who had 5 WR air raid offenses everywhere, except UCF/ECU. Speed/skill position players were our halmark in making our brand, then Snydes just changed our entire culture, and got us killed against most of the good teams in CUSA. So it's not like this is our first group of southern speed kids, it's our MO. And that's why power running teams have success so much against our smaller defense, but also why our guys historically run so well. Doc was just a natural fit w/ his recruiting ties, and if he goes, I'd suspect we'd go get another guy w/ Florida ties. It worked for over 20yrs. in a row, then the mistake hire happened. I don't think any of our fans/administration will go back to that style again, ever.

RE: Marshall fans, are you worried about losing Doc soon?
In a word Nope. He has gotten out coached at times and made some bad decisions in close games. This year was good but only 3 wins (so far) against an FBS teams with winning record that isn't exactly a Cinderella story. I also think he is very grateful to Marshall for giving him his first head coaching job. He's a country boy, a little like Rich Rodriguez so the big names probably think he's not sophisticated enough for them (Michigan fans always looked down on Rich Rod). Short of an offer from WVU I don't think he will get a better job than Marshall, some may pay a little better, but probably not a place you can win at, Kansas and Iowa St. come to mind.

RE: Marshall fans, are you worried about losing Doc soon?
Funniest thing about this thread is that at times this season many of our fans (including me I must admit) wished someone would come take him. We knew the recruiting was lights out, but we didn't know if he was ever gonna turn a corner as far as coaching goes. He's made some bad calls with timeouts, personnel changes, etc. At least in our minds in losses or close wins that shouldn't have been that close. I think more than any other season, though, he learned from those mistakes and someone has reached the players. They've settled down and seem focused the last several games. Special teams, my god, were a disaster but now look like they get it.

We'll see if it sticks. I think we all hope it does. No one has ever said they didn't like Doc as a human being. We've just been waiting on a miracle for a long time. I'd say we're over the hump but still have to see where the ceiling is. The good thing is if and when he goes we won't be left with a bare cupboard.

I know you guys don't like Hamrick either, but the man is building it around here. The face of campus is changing. The facilities are top notch and we're happy we'll at least get that much out of him.

WVU job pays $2.5million/yr. in the top 25 paying of the P5, they can get almost anyone they want so I don't see Doc being their choice. P5 schools go for young coaches.

There is a clause in Doc's contract that allows the school to block him from going to one school of Marshall's choosing. I'm sure you can guess which school that would be.

Next year will tell a lot about Doc, the team is loaded I can't see a loss on the 2014 schedule if he coaches like he did against ECU. I can't imagine him leaving for just any job, I would think it would have to be a place he believe he can win at and he would want to live. He also doesn't have the face of most P5 coaches since there is a definite youth movement when he comes to new coaches.

I read a few days ago that if he went to WVU, the buyout is tripled. Pretty good foresight.

Not true. Doc has told us before that he has had several interviews over the years but he did not take the jobs because the saw they were programs that were not committed to winning and were not behind the team in terms of support. He said his dad told him to wait for the right job to come his way and it would. Eventually our job came open and Mike went after him.

He said he would never take a job just to say he was a HC he wanted a job that he knew he could be successful and where he had the full support of the community and university. He never would say who the others were but he has a point. Too many coaches jump at the first chance to be HCs at places that are doomed to fail and then their careers are ruined. Doc waited and it paid off greatly. Not only are we committed but he got to come home.

I worry a little that once we get rolling and Marshall is back in the top 25 that WVU doesn't come calling with big money because they suck. As much as I enjoy them being a dumpster fire it scares me. I actually want them to be marginally successful so we an keep Doc for years to come.

I am worried, but I'd rather be worried to lose a guy than have no one want him.

You thought Fedora was gonna be there for the long haul? He never seemed like he was gonna stay there. USM was a resume builder for him.

See? everyone else is going to lose their coach, not "us".

you never expect to lose them on the afternoon they leave. there is a big difference between "fedora isn't going to retire in Hattiesburg" and leaving two days after the CC game for a basketball school who's football program is on probation.

But my point is that there is no such thing as a coach that want better deal you for the right situation.

Doc gets it. He has the formula for success at Marshall, and that is heavy non qualifier and prop 48 signees after national signing day. He has a school and AD that supports it. As long as Marshall can keep adding 4 or so of them per class a long with Docs regular recruits, it will be hard for the rest of CUSA to match. He's proven to be a great recruiter everywhere he's been. I hope Marshall can hang onto him.
