RE: The OFFICIAL Marshall @ Rice Thread: For All The Marbles
Nothing but respect for you guys but our offense is very capable of controlling the clock as well. ECU didn't think we could run on them and we ripped off a nine minute drive in the fourth doing nothing but running and capped it with a Cato run in the endzone.
Also, we don't need much time on the passing side of things to score and let you play catch up against your own clock management.
I see this game much like your Houston game, which I watched and rooted for you wholeheartedly. You'll trade touchdowns with us fairly easily for 3 quarters but get frustrated working for every one of them while we score effortlessly. A couple mistakes will lead to a late landslide. 42-28 or 49-35 Herd. Something along those lines.
I never make predictions, yet we lose sometimes anyways. So, why not?

I'll say the Herd wins 38-35. We are not very good on the road, I think we come prepared and mad that we aren't hosting. Down 4 with 5 minutes to go and Cato throws a late TD to Hoskins to win.

With us playing on the road, anything can happen. Confidence still not high. Rice is very solid.

RE: The OFFICIAL Marshall @ Rice Thread: For All The Marbles
Our offense was completely redone/reverted after the MTSU loss. The Legg experiment of calling a run play for every pass play ended. He was charting out plays and trying to make it balanced that way. After that MTSU loss Doc was done and we went back to what we do best. Uptempo and giving Cato the executive order on the field. That is why Essray ends up with so many run plays. He is mostly in there to be a blocker then Cato audibles out of the pass and goes run. When Cato is in rhythm there aren't very many teams in this country that can stop our offense. We have played two top defense this year and Cato was able to have his way. Moreso with ECU than VT but the VT defenders said they couldn't understand why we kept slowing it down because when Cato was running no huddle they had absolutely no answer.
Rice is a very good team and are having a great season but if Marshall clicks this game is over by the third quarter like last week. And don't be so excited about having a power run game. If you watched last week Doc finally brought out the Big Cheese package with Devon Johnson. I dare any of your defenders to step in front of him. It will not end well for them. The kid is a monster.

I'll be there rooting for the Krispies, but Cato and co are likely going to prove to be too much for Rice to cope with.

Thank you for the support. We need as many Coogs to show as possible. I don't really care if it is to root for or against us- though I was *totally* rooting for UH against USM a couple of years ago. Really :)

RE: The OFFICIAL Marshall @ Rice Thread: For All The Marbles
Look for Marshall to crowd the box and force Rice to beat them downfield. It's basically what they did with ECU, who had the athletes to pull it off and still failed. Rice does NOT have the players to beat us in the passing game. If Rice is going to win, they are going to have to pound the ball like last year, but that's a much tougher task now.
I see a few things. First, there is no chance of a lopsided Rice win. There is a chance for a lopsided MU win. I think most will agree with those statements.
If Marshall plays clean (-1 or better in T/O's), they will dismantle Rice. If Marshall plays ugly (-2 or worse), then it's going to be close and the difference will be defense. If MU is -4 or worse, they will lose.
I think most observers agree that Marshall can hold Rice under 35 points...barring a complete turnover meltdown like MT. I think VERY FEW observers, if any, really think that Rice can hold MU under 35.
We'll see. I'm guessing Marshall players have gotten over the major mental hurdle associated with losing for 11 years. I think MU plays to its averages on the season:
Marshall 45, Rice 21

So- you think Marshall will win, then?
For me, as a Rice guy, I'm just happy we get the opportunity to be on the same field as this Marshall team, which is clearly being robbed by getting no BCS bowl consideration. Playing Marshall is something that our players will be able to tell their grandchildren about (not because it is in the CCG, but because it is against...[respectful pause]...Marshall. I don't really have any hopes of winning- I mean, after reading the above why would I? I just hope some of the Marshall players will sign some autographs for our players after the game

Our players always circle the stadium shaking hands with fans after the game. I'm sure there will be room for you to lean over and shake all their hands.

I think we win 38-24.
I can't imagine our guys not being ready for this game. It's the CCG on ESPN and we are receiving votes.
Hope everyone has a safe trip and either way I'm happy we are getting to play a good Rice team. Looks good for the new CUSA to have us in the game.

RE: The OFFICIAL Marshall @ Rice Thread: For All The Marbles
Game reminds me of the C-USA version of Oregon vs. Stanford.
http://espn.go.com/college-football/team...egon-ducks
Oregon blows everyone out, has the speed, athletes, etc. They have advantage on common opponents. They have advantage on stat sheets/FBS rankings. Talking heads and message boards thus all take Oregon in double digit W game.
However, underneath that analysis is fact that Oregon is not a great road team in Pac-12, not great at stopping power running attack, and disciplined defenses that don't fall for the trickeration and play their assignments can stop the up-tempo offense. Result Stanford 26 Oregon 20... Hmmm.
