I haven't checked out the spreadsheet, but the text of this column is spot on. And the comments are good too. (The most humorous are by the bitter geniuses who still blame everyone else for thier woes. And why not? They're friggin' geniuses.)

I'd imagine grad school is similar to undergrad in that one should be careful in taking on large amounts of debt if the degree they will be earning is not in high demand. Going to grad school worked out for me.

Going to the 112th best Anthropology school in the nation for $100,000 was a bad choice?

Well, if the market for anthropoligists is strong, it could work out fine. ;-)

Not if it was the 112th ranked school. COGS

I have a feeling that with the way things are going some of those anthropologists might have a job researching the carcass that is the American dream...

I didn't read the article, but going to Grad school isn't something I would consider at this time if I were just finishing up undergrad. Maybe I would attend classes in an online program, but taking the time and added expense to physically go to class isn't worth it at this moment. My M.B.A. has gotten me in the door for several interviews, only to be told that I was over qualified. I've been told off the record that some companies are actively avoiding graduate degree holders when possible due to the higher salary demands. They are willing to trade classroom training and experience for less qualified individuals that they can train on the job and pay significantly less.

I agree and would definitely recommend getting some work experience before going to grad school. In fact, many MBA schools actually require work experience before they will even consider one for admission.

I can't say I made a bad decision in going to grad school. The average salary for a Human Factors Psychologist is just above $100k. The average starting salary is 3x greater than the starting salary with a bachelors in psychology.
