MyBB Charlotte 49ers and Alan Major Stuck in the Mud?
he Charlotte 49ers made some noise earlier this year and even appeared in our Mid-Major Madness Power 15 when they started the season 6-1 and beat Kansas State, Northeastern, and Michigan to win the Puerto Rico Tip-Off tournament. Since then the 49ers have seemingly been stuck in neutral and yesterday they lost their third straight game at the hands of Marshall and moved to 5-6 in Conference USA play.

Charlotte made the switch back from the Atlantic 10 to Conference USA this year to support the school's new football program, but Charlotte has always been a proud basketball program. In twelve years at Charlotte Bobby Lutz took the 49ers to the NCAA Tournament five times and averaged over 19 wins per year. Enter Alan Major who won 10, 13, and 21 games in his first three years at the helm. Major was rewarded for his 21-win season with a three-year extension from Charlotte Athletic Director Judy Rose, an extension that Charlotte Observer columnist Tom Sorenson disagrees with and he's persuaded me to agree with his view.

Sorenson's opinion on the 49ers 21-win season last year is pretty simple:

Major won 10, 13 and 21 games his first three seasons. But he won 21 with a non-conference schedule so soft it could have been designed by ESPN commentator Seth Greenberg when he coached at Virginia Tech.

Hard to argue with any of that. We look uninspired and sloppy. I'm glad we have some talent and even more coming in, but I'm pretty much ready for a change. I'd be excited to see what another person might be able to come in and do with Clayton, Henry, Ogbueze, Sullivan, Lester, etc. That has the potential to be a fantastic team and keep the new coach from having to completely rebuild. I would bank on another year of Major, however.

I'm surprised the same team that beat Kansas St & Michigan gets beat by the worst teams on their schedule

Please stop picking on us. We have great coach & great AD. If you don't believe it just read the first thread on the Charlotte page.

Our arena is full every game. In fact it's sold out every game.

If we continue to mail it in, many think Major may be gone, if we win a few it's doubtful. Almost all fans want him gone now. I doubt he's canned, but if he remains I think there needs to be some staff changes. Next year will be NCAA or bust for him.

I 100% agree.

We have a lot of talent on our team.

Next year we will have Ogbueze and Sullivan, plus Dorn and Woods. Henry and TWill will be seniors, and Willie will be a junior. Lester and Thorne will also bring back experience.

Next year is the year for Major if he wants to stay at Charlotte.

We're stuck, but it's not mud that we're stuck in.
