RE: Todays enquirer
If it makes you feel any better, the online version of the Enquirer has a UC game pictorial that dominates the bottom of the main page.

My RSS feeder is no longer picking up Cincinnati.com's headlines... Looks like they may have shut them down with the new site redesign. Guess I won't be reading their articles anymore.

This has become a common theme in journalism of all sorts over the last 15-20 years. Journalists only care about their own causes, business model be damned.

RE: Todays enquirer
It shouldn't come as a surprise to any of us, but the Enquirer decided to double down on yesterday's poor placement for UC basketball by burying the feel good story of the year--UC playing for a conference championship today and a possible one seed in the AAC tourney. Check it out on page 6 behind a spring training feature on the cover. It's hard to imagine that March college basketball isn't top of mind, even in Cincinnati prior to Opening Day.

at the ENQ. Granted we are lower in rank of influence to REDS/Bengals,
but do we make a concerted effort to push our product to the media?

It's not the ENQ job to be ad agency for UC, but there has to be
concern at AD level about our treatment.

This.

I don't think any of us are asking the wrap to be homers, but that so-called "news" paper seems to go out of its way to disown UC.

Why can't they be homers? Every other paper in the country seems to be supporters of their local teams. How does the dispatch treat OSU?

This ain't hard hitting investigative journalism folks. It's not like the Enquirer ever really went after that clown Mallory. Heck didn't they even support the streetcar?

Xavier is a small school. Small alum base. And unless your catholic I suppose no one gives a crap about them. Their league is a name and that's about it. Yet Shannon whatever her name is loves to pimp them.

Yeah maybe the enquirer should notice who espn and CBS etc are paying attention to....and it ain't that piece of crap school tucked between Avondale and Evanston.

Yeah what is wrong with them being homers? Every other local paper in the country are enormous homers towards their hometown school.

And I agree about Xavier. They have a very small following. It's baffling the pub the Enquirer gives them because they are doing their own paper a disservice considering the minute fan base. I'd say even the majority of catholics locally, like myself could care less about them and arent fans. For some reason the Enquirer still seems to think the Big East is the same as it used to be and is some sort of elite league. Hell I'd take the AAC over this new watered down Big East.

Nothing wrong at all. I would prefer they be UC homers, in fact. Not overwhelming sunshine on a cloudy day type homers that would insult the intelligence of most, but it would be nice to have somebody seeing the glass half full once in awhile.

My point was, I'll even take straight up objectivity over being repeatedly kicked in the groin. Objectivity should, at least, be the minimum expectation, and we don't really seem to get that.

Thank God for Groeschen and football coverage. At least he gets it.

RE: Todays enquirer
I emailed the Enquirer and here is their response:

Mr. X,

Thank you for your email regarding our college basketball coverage. I would like to clarify some points you make in your note.

You state you didn't see the sports page and found out about the Xavier and Cincinnati stories on a forum. Since you didn't see the newspaper in question and mentioned you stopped reading our paper years ago, you might not have the whole information you need. On the Thursday sports cover the Xavier game was the photo on the front page and the UC story by Bill Koch was also on the cover. You also might have missed that the previous day on Wednesday UC was the cover photo with a great image of Kilpatrick, Rubles and Jackson on their senior night.

There were two important games going on at the same time and we chose to balance this out by having the photo of one of the teams and the story of the other. This game was important to both teams. UC was positioning themselves for a better seed and Xavier was also trying to get off the bubble. That is also important. This was their last shot before the conference tournament to help their tournament resume. UC played yesterday and were on the cover of today's paper.

There is very clearly no bias towards UC. We do not favor one school over the other.

I do also want to expand upon some of the points you make below. You say we refuse to give good coverage of UC basketball and football. In case you missed it, we have added a beat writer to the UC beat meaning there are two reporters now on UC athletics, one covering basketball and the other covering football. This is the first in the Enquirer's history that there have been two reporters covering the athletic department.

You also state that there are other outlets to get UC news. I will agree with you that there are, but there isn't any local media outlet that covers the athletic program like we do. You mention other blogs well, where they at the UC football scrimmage yesterday? Did the blogs spend the week with Munchie Legoux recently where he showed us his progress during his rehab from his knee injury? Did you happen to read our story with Oscar Robertson where he discussed Sean Kilpatrick and how much he respects him as a player? Did you happen to read the five-part series by Bill Koch in the summer about the athletic program and its conference history?

If you go to our website now you will see videos from Tommy Tuberville, Gunner Kiel, and photos from all the games home and away.

I know you said you haven't read us in a couple of years so you might have missed all the coverage we are giving the school. I would urge you to go to cincinnati.com and see for yourself the changes we have made.

Thanks again for your feedback and if you have any further questions or comments, please do not hesitate to get back in touch.

This is the problem. UC is a nearly 40,000 student school and the largest employer in the city. There are at least 3 UC fans for every XU fan in the city. They said both games were important, when both games are important UC should trump XU every time.

Uh, dude, you just made my point for me: you stopped reading and buying our paper years ago, so why exactly should we care what you think? You obviously missed quite a bit of our coverage, so go review it before you whine to us again.

They are at it again....What a joke...Saw a tweet saying Mic thinks SK is bigeast player of the year....hmmm

That task might be a little tricky. Dont you have to play in the big east to win big east player of the year?

http://www.cincinnati.com/story/sports/c...r/6263099/

They just changed it after I told them they are dumb. But as you can see the link clearly says big east

RE: Todays enquirer
Here is the problem with local media, UC and Xavier are not equals. Cincinnati is a bigger school with more alums and casual fans. One school has city's name on it while the other is a small private school. This March, UC is having the better season and relevant on a nation level. Xavier is good but they don't have the same depth of support that UC has. I am not saying they should never cover Xavier at the same level as UC but rather that when all things considered the Bearcats are a clear number three behind the Reds and Bengals in this city.

RE: Todays enquirer
By the Enquirer's faulty logic, NKU should be getting equal coverage with UC and X. Northern is in the metro--maybe as close to downtown as X. The school is Division I and more than twice as large as X. Oh, and unlike X, NKU has actually won national championships when they were in Division II.

I'm down to three days a week with the print edition and this may be the final straw. No one is suggesting they promote UC; just follow the journalistic credo of printing what's of the greatest interest to the greatest number of readers in the market. Objective measures make it clear that in local college sports it's UC hands down.
