RE: A Little Love for Maryland and Rutgers
Maryland is already strong in basketball, the rest of the conference should be worried. Rutgers is in a huge market for basketball and they have just recently began to make strong efforts to improve themselves in that department. I think they would have succeeded in the Big East but that conference fell apart. Now in the Big Ten, Rutgers is in the perfect conference for them to build a solid basketball program.

In football, both schools have been making strides. Maryland has had some impressive showings and I think they are going to surprise some folks right away in Big Ten competition. The same goes for Rutgers. Suddenly they have a shot at some of the best prospects in New Jersey and the surrounding area where as before much of that talent would get poached away. I think Rutgers is a strong program in the making and people are going to eat their words when it comes to all this harsh judgement about taking them into the Big Ten.

I am really looking forward to seeing rivalries between those two schools and Penn State as well as with each other. The Maryland and Rutgers rivalry may be hard for some folks to swallow but I don't see why. Geographically they are close and now they have something in common, joining the Big Ten at the same time. They may not have much history together but they certainly have a lot of potential in terms of building a future together.

RE: A Little Love for Maryland and Rutgers
Hello, long-time lurker, first-time poster. I'm just getting my way around here, so some things that are obvious to everyone are so new to me.

First of all, happy to have the school I root for join a real conference for a change, instead of a fly-by-night collection where factions were only too interested in promoting their interests, regardless of the harm caused to others. Too much lingering bitterness from that experience but now looking forward to, hopefully, a brighter future.

Well, I kinda hoped that our admission to the B1G would be a bit low-key but with Scarlet Julie (that's my nickname for the AD) that wasn't going to be possible. 03-wink

Anyway, yes, the Big East is now dead to me. I wish for those 10 private schools the best but it's no longer the conference I used to know. Its "death" has many culprits. Actually, every school who has been in it at one time or another has some fault in that. However, E-Spin (my name for the Mouse Sports Network) has a huge role as well. How about promoting the narrative that it was accident that they were in the BCS? Somebody in the editorial department must have thought this up and then have the flunkies relay it to the audience. Well, I should've known something was up considering the number of Cuse grads who work there. I could go on and on but I'll leave that for later...

I've been boning up on the Big Ten since the announcement, through watching BTN, their Twitter page, etc.. I really like BTN Live (6pm ET where I live). Not that I necessarily agree with all of the opinions expressed there but at least I know that if there's something Big Ten-related that somebody might bring it up there, since I know that E-Spin isn't going to cover northern schools all that much.

Beyond PSU and UMD, I think the program where I would like to play against more is Northwestern, as a way of starting a "NY vs Chicago" thing. Nebraska looks to be a fun series, even though I know the FB team will struggle against them. I understand Illinois will be the cross division rival in two years. The FB program has had success against them in the past and, by then, we should have a team capable of beating them most years.

Rutgers stadium gets a B1G logo. Six more days and it's official whether the rest of the B1G wants them or not.

A Little Love for Maryland and Rutgers
I'm looking forward to Rutgers and Maryland coming to the B1G and think people will be pleasantly surprised at how well they fit after a couple of years. I know a lot of people will look right away at the FB and BB teams as the main gauge but it's a lot more than that for schools to fit; culture, size, academics, etc. I've visited about a quarter of the P5 campuses and definitely feel that Rutgers and Maryland would be on my short list as good fits based on how the existing B1G campuses feel. I'll be checking the schedule for when Sparty rolls to Rutgers and Maryland to offer my official welcome to B1G! But for now welcome and I think you'll like how well the B1G travels!

Other thread says Maryland gets the men's Lacrosse tournament in 2015, while Rutgers gets the women's in 2015. Johns Hopkins gets the men's in 2016, NW the women's.

Why does Maryland no longer use the Testudo logo and use the M with the state flag underline instead?

I like the new logo better personally. Its noveau yet classic looking at the same time. It's something that can endure. Rutgers going to the Block R in 2001/2002 was a similar move although purely classic looking. Its actually based on older, informal Block R designs used by the school as early as the 1890s. Michigan, Ohio State, Indiana, Minnesota, Wisconsin haven't changed their primary logos in a very long time because of their classic nature.

A new Scarlet Knight mascot will be revealed next month. I think we'll be seeing the payoff from all those Muslce Guzzler smoothies and his workout regimen with Sparty.

Yeah... In a one on one fight... I'll take Sparty without a doubt.

Maybe that would be good summer programming. UFC style mascot fights!!!

No doubt that both programs have the potential to bring lots of TV sets and laptops to the B10. New Jersey and Maryland(DC Delaware) are loaded with both football and hoops talent and moving up to a conference that values football more than the ACC or American should help those 2 programs to recruit better talent from their home regions and other states.

On top of that Maryland is a hotbed for LaCrosse which will be a new conference sport with the addition of Johns Hopkins University where Lacrosse is their only collegiate sport but being in MD where Lacrosse is huge means they should also do well. Adding these 3 institutions to Penn State, Ohio State & Michigan means the conference has the necessary 6 programs playing to make this a conference sport. Should be exciting

Lacrosse is not Johns Hopkins' only collegiate sport. It is their only Division I sport. All other Hopkins' athletic teams compete at the Division III level.

RE: A Little Love for Maryland and Rutgers
How about a little more love from Iowa?

The Big Ten’s addition of two new members is good financial news for the league’s athletics departments.

Iowa forecasts a boost of nearly $4.44 million in conference revenue to more than $30.7 million for fiscal year 2015, according to documents filed with the state’s Board of Regents. The jump coincides with the Big Ten’s additions of Rutgers and Maryland, which begin play this month.

In a Sept. 22, 2013 meeting of the Big Ten Council of Presidents/Chancellors, the group voted to approve amendments boosting increased television rights fees. The changes, which were spurred by the expansion, affect three years of agreements with ESPN (2014-2016) and 14 years with BTN (2014-2027), according to information obtained by The Gazette. BTN, of which the league owns 49 percent, also secured penetration into the Washington D.C. and New York City markets this summer, which adds to the revenue spike.

You might want to program a macro for that. Big Ten schools are used to varsity sports all being scholarship sports and non-scholarship sports all being club sports, so to the extent that Big Ten fans notice Div3 teams at all, viewing them as more or less sports clubs that happen to operate under the NCAA banner would not be all that uncommon.

But looking forward to spring, even if there's a good chance I'll be in China at the time so I don't know how I'm going to get the Buckeye's Lacrosse games on my tablet.

I am looking forward to the addition of Rutgers and Maryland. PSU hasn't had a true rival since joining the BiG and it will be awesome to play every year against schools they played regularly prior to joining the BiG. I think both schools will do very well in many sports.
