RE: Marquette Reportedly Just Hired Shaka Smart...
Turning down the kind of gigs he's been doing, I think there's only one place he will go: the pros.
I kind of think he's pulling a BOB when he's telling kids something but not restating it publicly. If he wants more money, there's a better way to do that (I mean, really, does this happen every year with Gonzaga?). If he wants a better job, he shouldn't say a word to the kids, which, supposedly, he's doing anyway.

1 year removed from back to back sweet 16's and high rankings. I don't think 1 year is going to make his seat hot.

It happened every year with Chris Petersen at Boise State, until he finally took the Washington job a couple of months ago.
Maybe the only reason it doesn't happen every year at Gonzaga is that Mark Few kept telling people he wasn't interested and they finally believed him. He certainly has the track record that would make other programs want to hire him. In 15 years at Gonzaga, he's been in the NCAA tournament every year and has won at least one game in the NCAA tournament 12 out of 15 years.

I think the Petersen thing was expected when there are clearly programs in CFB that have no shot of access to a championship (and I don't know if it's coincidence or irony that he left one season after the whole BSU/SDSU BEF/AAC flip-flop fiasco and right after the playoff picture pretty much shut them out, too). It's different with CBB. Few's sort of the modern model for guys who stay with the small school, although I think he's done in the near future, too.
Smart's going to do what he's going to do, but I just hope he isn't saying one thing to his kids and saying something contradictory with his agent, the school, or suitors.

That top VCU assistant Mike Rhoades took the Rice jobs shows Shaka Smart isn't going anywhere. By all accounts he and his wife is very happy here in Richmond, he is well paid, he has a good thing going at VCU, and has built up so much goodwill with fans the school and the community that he would need a multi-year streak of losing seasons or a serious scandal to ever be in the hot seat. Job security and stability in the college coaching world is pretty nice for a young guy with a young family.

Isn't it primarily a question of Mike Rhoades getting the chance to be a Head Coach?

Yep, he wanted the VCU job if Smart was going to leave, but since he's not going anywhere for a while, Rhoades took the Rice job.

If Smart was going to leave, Rhodes would likely have stayed right now and taken over when Smart left.
