Old Dominion recently turned down a $1.3 million payday from Alabama to play a game at Bryant-Denny Stadium in 2015, according to a report Thursday from the Virginian-Pilot.

The Monarchs, who have been playing football since 2009, will log their first season at the Football Bowl Subdivision as a member of Conference USA in 2014. Their 2015 non-conference schedule is full (Eastern Michigan, Norfolk State, North Carolina State and Appalachian State), and athletic director Wood Selig said he didn't see the need to rearrange it.

"We’ve already got 12 games,” Selig told the Virginian-Pilot. "I’d certainly touch base with (coach) Bobby Wilder on this, but I don’t think playing a game against Alabama would be an advisable move given the infancy of our program."

Bama's two open dates for 2015 are the same weeks that ODU hosts both Norfolk State (FCS) and NC State. ODU is not going to cancel either for a road loss. NSU if your one FCS, bowl eligibility game and NC State is an ACC team coming to Norfolk.

Now if they can work out a deal for NC State to delay a year then the trip to Bama makes sense.

The AD made the correct decision. ODU has no business playing Alabama at this point in its development.

we sold out to them next season and have a history with those guys.....I see us doing one of these games moving forward for the only reason that seems to matter......da cash.

Looking at it a different way. If odu doesn't have the balls to play with the best, don't trash southern miss about standing up for our self with the ncaa snub.
We are 1-23 over the last 2 years but we are going over there this year.

I'm not sure ODU trashed USM. In fact, most of us agree that you were snubbed.

I don't think that the rejection is about a lack of balls. Our schedule was full and it didn't make sense to drop either game yet for what is sure to be a butt-whoopin' (though I would like to see what a healthy ODU offense could do against Bama's D).

We'll get to play them someday. Let's see if we can finish a game against an ACC team first.

Alabama wants ODU to cancel either a FCS home game, which everyone plays against a city rival OR cancel an ACC opponent coming to Norfolk.

No program would go along with that.

I think it may be you who is doing the misunderstanding here, ODUR8R.

I believe that Thegoldstandard's comment had little to do with ODU's scheduling considerations, but lots to do with his own insecurity over the negligible carat count of his ingot.

They are an infant program and don't need the game. Good for them. Your ncaa snub has nothing to do with it. Your basketball team was damn good and deserved to be in but ODU football scheduling is not related.

I think it was a logical decision by your AD. Throw away a visiting ACC home game or rival game for a paid beat down. As far as goldstandards post, sour grapes.

Or you could look at it even differently. Apparently ODU doesn't need an incremental million dollars to fund our program. That speaks to the strength of our athletic balance sheet. A well funded, committed athletic program is a good thing for CUSA.

Yeah, why risk beating Alabama on the road and getting paid $1MM+ for the pleasure when you could possibly lose a home game to Norfolk State instead?

Good for you, ODU, whore games do nothing for your program than put a little money in the bank.

Wilder has been upfront about his desire to not sign on for bodybag games. Last season was an exception prompted by having to jerry-rig an FCS Independent schedule. This year Vandy is an exception because it fit the sweet spot of a) paying well and b) being a relatively accessible game in terms of shooting for an upset. @Alabama with only one full season of FBS play under their belts AND a new starting QB would have been a formal request to be elephant food.

Plus so long as ODU's selling out every game and rebuilding the basketball fanbase, they don't desperately need those kind of games to make the budget work out.

Bama recruits heavily in the 757. They just want to mark their territory by taking a dump on the Monarchs.....

lol, Sims gambled by going to Bama. Sure he got his NC Ring but when you're competing with other 4 and 5 star QB's on that squad, someone is going to lose.
