Rutgers Hockey
With all the increased revenue with the B1G move and large popularity in ny/nj does Rutgers have ambitious goals of a hockey program?

Their board has pretty much said "extremely unlikely" every time the idea pops up. They need someone like the Penn State donor that funded the entire start-up.

Yeah. Basically the biggest issue is there is no where to play the games. At least no where with seats where they could recoup money to break even.

RE: Rutgers Hockey
I'd love to see it. And I do think its one of the pipe dreams of the athletic department based on a conversation I had a number of years ago. That being said it boils down to 2 other goals. One is getting the overall, existing sports program to a successful level. Two is getting the financial situation straightened out. Then hockey would be seriously considered but like Penn State would probably require a big donation to get things rolling.

I'd love to see Rutgers hockey too. The B1G Ten Hockey conference needs to grow, it would be great to have 10-12 programs one day.

UConn has hockey (they are a member of Hockey East). Also, UConn knows a thing or two about that game with the round orange ball.

If the B1G needs another hockey school, a call to Storrs would seem like a logical call to make. Yeah yeah, I know that UConn football needs to improve and get back to form, but the overall athletic package that UConn brings to the table is still more impressive than what Rutgers and Maryland bring at the moment (not a diss on Rutgers and Maryland - both schools still have a lot going for them athletically).

UConn just needs to get an AAU invite first. Then, I think that Jim Delany should make the call. The B1G would then own NYC with Rutgers and UConn on each side of it.

Hockey was popular in the DC area before Ovie was drafted by the Capitals. Before white flight in PG County, where UMD is located, several local public high schools played hockey as a club sport. And this was in the late 1970s.

Maryland plays its home games at the Wells Ice Rink, which is located about 1 mile off campus.

Watching the Frozen Four and the Minny/NoDak game was a sleeper until both squads score mid way through the 3rd.

What an ending!!!!

Minny wins on a shot made at the end of the game, leaving 0.6 seconds for NoDak.

Minny to the Finals against Union College.

RE: Rutgers Hockey
Rutgers' number one priority right now is renovating or replacing the basketball arena. That's been the primary focus of their fundraising efforts. Building a place for hockey is much lower on the list and I don't know if it's even been seriously considered. The only hope for a hockey on campus would be if they were able to raise the funds for a new basketball arena and it was built with an ice sheet. Renovation of the existing arena, though, is much more likely, and even if they did build a new arena, there's no guarantee that they would commit to D1 hockey.

I doubt we'll be seeing Maryland adding any sports until they get their finances in order. The recently cancelled sports would probably be at the top before they consider any new ones like hockey. If Maryland did ever to choose to play D1 hockey, Cole Fieldhouse could be transformed into a pretty nice hockey arena. It's largely unused these days except as a practice facility.

I'd love to see Terps Hockey in Cole! Hockey is actually pretty popular in DC, so it's not too much of a stretch to see it catch on. That being said, money and Title IX will be the biggest barriers.

And FWIW....

I think short term Nebraska is setting up for a hockey team, new gym with ice and I think since Omaha plays the husker want to flex their muscles. And a minny win in the title game would be a nice story for the inaugural B1G hockey season
