Championship Game Deregulation
Thoughts on how this will affect C-USA?

http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball...era-begins

Quote:The so-called deregulation of conference title games would allow leagues to select the teams without the required round-robin divisional play. That becomes an issue as the ACC goes into the second season of 14 members (seven in each division) in football.

“You wouldn't necessarily have to have divisions,” Swofford said.

Deregulation is expected to fly through and could be passed quickly by the NCAA board of directors. Both Swofford and Bowlsby have indicated there is no push-back from other conferences on the measure.

I don't think it will affect C-USA. In a league like ours where we don't make P5 money from TV or bowls, tightly grouped East and West divisions are important for travel expenses and to create regional rivalries.

Even with divisions for travel reasons there will be the choice of how we choose the 2 teams in the ccg. Could be the 2 highest rated via whatever rating system with the highest rated hosting or head to head winner hosting but who knows. This will just allow us and every other conference to make their own decision on the method of choosing ccg participants and whether or not to have divisions instead of having the ncaa making that decision for us. Might be a good idea to have the choice to NOT have the game at all in years where we have one obvious standout team that would be headed to the access bowl. That year we could just call it off so we don't risk losing that appearance.

RE: Championship Game Deregulation
Seems it would apply to each of the FBS conferences and it tackles the problem for example where an undefeated "East Division" team loses to an 8-4 "West Division" team in the CCG potentially knocking the East team out of a chance at the Access Bowl.

With the new rule, divisions wouldn't be needed, thereby allowing the opportunity for what would have been an undefeated "East Division" team matching up against an 11-1 second place team in the "East Division" instead of the 8-4 "West Division" team.

Better shot of getting the access bowl no matter which team wins in that scenario.

No divisions needed, but the schedule can still be put together with proximity in mind to maintain regional rivalries.

Both good points. Hadn't thought of it that way.

RE: Championship Game Deregulation
if CUSA was smart they would go with 7 conference games and 5 OOC games

they should get rid of the divisions as well, but of course with the stupid number of 14 for conference membership that makes it difficult to do so because there is only one way to split 14 evenly and that is two divisions of 7

going to 16 is really just as stupid, but I suppose if you can't go back to 12 or 10 you are where you are

either way 7 conference games and 5 OOC games is where the CUSA needs to be if they ever want to have anything of significance happen for any single member of the conference or for the conference in general

anything besides that and CUSA is just along for the ride and accepting what they are given and will continue to do so

It's hard enough to find 4 quality OOC games. 5 would not be any better.

In terms of a conference championship game. If we have an eventual option, I would favor division champs play each other, unless there is a higher rated team in one division where 2nd place has beaten 1st place. Ties would go to divisional winners.

For example: East Winner: Marshall at 6-2; West Winner: UTSA at 5-3. East second place is MTSU at 6-2. In this case, Marshall vs. MTSU,unless MTSU lost head to head with Marshall, in which case it reverts to Division winners.

But, if East winner: Marshall at 7-1; West Winner: UTSA at 6-2 and East second place is MTSU at 6-2, then Division winner always takes precedence regardless of what the 2nd place team did and who they beat.

I have a feeling that your setup would revert to a coin flip and the Marshall vs. MTSU game would be played at Rice's stadium.
