The situation I'm bitching and moaning about is completely different from the situation at UTEP. We're not playing in the Haskins Center. We don't have Tim Floyd.
I don't know your complete history with Fitbud, but I will say that UTEP fans have been a pretty unsympathetic bunch when it comes to USM. I haven't forgotten the way Mike Price threw us under the bus for not supporting Ellis Johnson better in 2012.
I'm sorry, but when I see a smelly old pervert, I may just point him out... and when USM and UTEP met during the 2012 football season, there were at least two smelly old perverts in the stadium, and it's no surprise that those guys stick together.
Personally, I respect my wife, and the people who sign my paycheck, and I work very hard regardless of who those people are. I expect the same of USM's leadership, and I don't apologize for that.
Welcome to the "goodolboy" system that holds UTEP back from being better than it can be.
They are loyal like dogs even at the expense of their own University.
What's the alternative for UTEP, though? Membership in the MWC? My take on that was always that differences in academics destroyed the WAC, and that the MWC would thus be very hesitant to add UTEP, a school which (for better or worse) basically admits anyone. The PAC-12 is even more snooty about academics. So I think that UTEP's mission, admirable though it may be, kind of puts a ceiling on its aspirations in terms of conference affiliation.
If academics was the only issue in keeping the MWC from inviting UTEP then explain Boise State. The highest rated academic school is Colorado State (Air Force is at another level so they don't count), once you go past CSU and perhaps Hawaii, it's not that rosy academic wise. I really hate the academic snobbery since I really believe universities have different missions that their communities need. We can't all be Harvard, Rice, Stanford, etc.
The California State University System branches in San Diego, San Jose and Fresno are the red hair step children of California universities since the University of California System schools get the lion's share in funding and research. If I'm not mistaken, the Cal State flagship school, San Diego State offers like 4 or 5 PhD degrees while UTEP offers close to 20. Fresno State offers none and I believe San Jose State is in the same boat. Compare the University of California flagship (Berkeley) and the Cal State flagship (San Diego) and the gap is so wide is not even pretty. UNLV is hardly considered an academic power but like Boise, they do a good job in providing a quality education for their residents who otherwise can't afford to go to another college and their state's flagship campus are hundreds of miles away (like in UTEP's case). Boise State was often referred as a "truck driving school" by MWC fans back when Utah, BYU and TCU were in the conference.
The only reason why some UTEP fans (including myself) find the MWC appealing is because for the most part it has urban schools that are the only game in town and has a strong basketball brand located in the same time zone. The Pac-12 is a pipe dream that will never happen.

I always think I'm a superfan until I come across people who track plane activity during coaching searches.

The Mountain West is where UTEP needs to go. CUSA is doing nothing but hurting UTEP.
This year, Men's basketball won 23 games and they weren't even considered for the NIT. That would not have happened in the MWC which is a multiple bid conference.
It's come to the point that fans are going to have to stay away until UTEP joins the MWC.

There's no way UTEP would've won 23 games in the MWC last season. And BTW, the thing that killed any chances for an at large bid was the WTF loss to New Orleans in December.

Boise State was a very cynical addition by the MWC. Still, though, they probably don't admit quite so large a proportion of their applicants as UTEP does. At the same time, UTEP is more of a research institution than BSU. So it's a toss-up, and if you played football like Boise, I think you'd be in.
Just to be clear, I admire and respect UTEP's mission. I'm with you on that.
Some of the MWC's academic pretentions have historically been directed at impressing BYU. Perhaps that ship has sailed forever now.
