i am by no means a soccer fan, but I am not dumb enough (like you) to not realize that the world cup is literally the most popular sports tournament in the world.

The Olympics are comparatively inconsequential compared to the pressure involved with the World Cup in the rest of the world. Not sure what the problem is considering that Google is a global website.

It's damn near caused a civil war over there. That's my entire point in posting this thread, Google should be doodling something else. If this WC hadn't caused so many problems over there, I wouldn't have made this thread because I don't care if Google celebrates something foreign.

The Super Bowl makes the World Cup look like a 3rd rate event.

1. No it doesn't, and it's not close.

2. Did you just use the evil NFL as a reference point?

3. Boring is in the eye of the beholder. Baseball doesn't score a whole lot, either.

You'll never make it here. You are much to reasonable.

thx frank for saving me from having to explain that to these knuckleheads.

just an FYI, cons making threads complaining about what google is celebrating each day is a regular occurrence.

People are dying and getting the shiit beat out of them over there right now because of the World Cup. You like celebrating shiit like that?

can we add out of touch with reality to the list of things that you don't have a clue about.

FYI i keep tabs on which sporting events get the most international publicity. the superbowl didn't make the front page of BBC until the game ended and put an announcement of the score. the other day all 7 of BBC's front pages which usually have a different feature story were all filled with a different world cup story.

hell michael same got more coverage on BBC than the super bowl

BS. this is the third time in the last 2 weeks we have had a thread like this. something tells me that regardless of what google chooses to celebrate, you will have a problem with it.

Another good point is that soccer is a cesspool of violence. I don't see it being a productive venue to make mainstream in the US.

Meh. Did the fact that Detroit was and is going down an economic sinkhole mean that when it held the Super Bowl a few years ago, everyone had to be "OMG! NO ONE SHOULD BE TALKING ABOUT THE SUPER BOWL BECAUSE DETROIT HAS A GAZILLION PROBLEMS!"? Does every time that the Super Bowl gets held in Miami, New Orleans or any other city mean that Google should only be concentrating on the crime and poverty going on in those areas and ignore an event that millions of people are watching?

Every country and virtually every city has its fair share of crappy problems, including the richest areas of the first world (like the US and Europe). The main attraction of sports is that it's the one place where all of that crap can be put aside for a few hours. I feel like I'm in bizarro world seeing people actually complain about Google having a World Cup theme. If people don't want to watch it, then don't watch it. Billions (with a "b") of other people, both liberal and conservative, are watching every moment.

*sigh*

This thread is NOT about Google celebrating the damn World Cup. It's about Google celebrating something that is about to turn a city into a local World War. Damn, people, get your shiit together and pay attention to what I keep saying. It's not about the Google Theme. It's not about the Google Theme.

funny thing,

the top thread in the spin room is a sports discussion and the top thread in the college sports forum is a political discussion.

Obviously soccer fans don't pay attention either, because nobody understands the point of this shiit.

There is an Irish bar here in Memphis called Celtic Crossing. When there are big soccer matches it fills up with genuine Irishmen, doing what Irishmen are famous for. You know getting drunk etc. I'd love to see you go in there and tell them they are liberal. I'll buy your beer, deal?

Are they really celebrating it? These Google "celebrations" on their front page are really just themes for the biggest current events in the US and worldwide....

Yeah, Smaug said that. Here in this country, it's just the opposite, but I didn't feel like explaining it to him.

This is about the Brazilian government screwing it's people over and them fighting back, and an attempt to find out why Google would celebrate that. But it's clearly over your head, and many others so yeah, even though it's totally political, I guess you might as well relate it to being a sports thread.

MY point was that the World Cup is a big effin' deal, period.

It's a big ole world.
