Will the Big Ten impact Rutgers men's basketball recruiting?
http://www.mycentraljersey.com/story/spo.../11641033/

Article in myCentralJersey.com where three experts were asked about this question. All three think that Rutgers has a lot of work to do, although one of them thinks that Big Ten money could help them compete over time.

Rutgers basketball has been mostly crap since Jimmy V was aloud to escape. We sit in the best basketball recruiting area in the country and were in the best basketball conference that ever was and still couldn't build the program. The B10 money certainly can't hurt, but I'm not holding my breath waiting the resurgence.

RE: Will the Big Ten impact Rutgers men's basketball recruiting?
I honestly think that the money will eventually make an enormous difference. Rutgers has lacked resources for a while hence the facilities are just not up to par. That doesn't mean it will always be that way, it just means that there is some catching up on the deferred maintenance and building some new faciilites that will need to take place.
I honestly think that in many regards Rutgers is a better long term job than most of the schools in the B1G. The fan support is there. The local recruiting is there. The exposure is now in place. The money will come and with it new facilities and better coaches.
There is exactly one professional team that claims New Jersey, The Devils. The NBA left, the NFL has 2 teams that play in Jersey but are named New York. What's the point: Rutgers should certainly have a presence across the Hudson and Delaware but they should OWN Jersey.
The state government doesn't look like its going to help and the school administration isn't exactly enamored with the thought of further subsidizing athletics so this may take a while but I like what happened at Nebraska as a good model to follow.
1. Build a killer on campus practice facility. Basketball and football are the priorities but as many other sports that can be included in the plan would lift their programs as well.
2. Go in with a local city that wants to bring in events and build a basketball specific arena with about 16,000 to 19,000 seats and all of the amenities. Put in place an agreement that will make men's and women's basketball the primary tenants.
3. Convert the RAC to a palace for women's volleyball and wrestling which have a legitimate shot at becoming revenue sports in the B1G.
4. Expand the football stadium. With a division containing Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan, Sparty, and Maryland I see no reason why RU couldn't fill up an 80,000 seat stadium on a regular basis and, if/when the program becomes top 10 consistently, even more than that.
5. The B1G is far flung enough. I'd use out of conference games IN ALL SPORTS to schedule exclusively regional teams with an emphasis on old Big East rivals and especially Syracuse and UConn.
There is just a ton of potential at Rutgers. With much justification there is a lot of competition for local and regional recruits in both football and basketball. You guys have a built in recruiting advantage that can only be matched by Ohio State, Penn State, Maryland, and Illinois in conference. The future is real simple... lock up hometown recruits become more like OSU or PSU, don't and have programs like Maryland or Illinois.
One of the biggest hindrances has been commitment from the powers that be which translated to lack of money and administrative support. Now with the B1G money starting to come in and big time opponents on the schedule the future is bright for RU.
