I bet it would show that MLB teams have a much higher % of season-ticket holders, and half-season holders, living with 10 or 20 miles of the stadium than NFL teams do. NFL teams have lots of ticket buyers who live farther away -- the 49ers and Raiders say they have a lot of season ticket holders in Sacramento or farther away; I doubt the same is true for the Giants or A's.
The Chargers claim that 30% of their season ticket holders live in LA or Orange counties. Maybe people are willing to drive or take the train 70-100 miles for 8 NFL regular season games a year, but not for 82 or even 41 MLB games.
That's actually precisely what I've been pointing out countless times in this thread. It's simply not realistic to get off at 4:00 P.M. (best case scenario for most people with jobs) and travel 1/2 to 3 hours (depending on traffic) to another metro area and back late at night consistently 3-7 times a week for 6 months. And oh yeah, maybe they have kids and would want to take them and a spouse, so the person working would have to travel across town to pick them up.
It can be done but not only would the novelty wear off after a while but so would it too wear down a person, becoming just as much of a chore as going to work every day. For the MLB, most of the fanbase should be within 15 miles of the stadium because of how many weekday games there are. In the NFL, a fan can be in Antarctica and fly in every weekend because it's a one off event that only happens 10-12 times a year (including pre-season) in a city.
Like Antartica thing. Read a story in a British online paper comparing Premier League ticket prices to Bundesliga. Said if you live in Manchester it would be cheaper for your favorite team to be one of a couple German teams close to an airport where cheap flights from Manchester were available because you could fly to Germany go to the game and fly back for less than the cost of going to see United or City play.
