Rutgers slips to Texas Bowl
December 3, 2006
By PA SportsTicker

Rutgers may be going to consecutive bowl games for the first time, but not to the one it wanted.

One day after missing out on a BCS bowl berth because of a triple-overtime defeat, the Scarlet Knights accepted a bid to play Kansas State in the inaugural Texas Bowl on Sunday.

Rutgers (10-2) came up just short at West Virginia on Saturday, 41-39 in triple overtime. Had the Scarlet Knights won the game, they would have won the Big East Conference's automatic BCS bowl bid. Instead, Louisville (11-1) secured the league title and will oppose Wake Forest (11-2) in the Orange Bowl.

West Virginia (10-2) accepted a spot in the Gator Bowl against Georgia Tech (9-4) on New Year's Day, relegating Rutgers to the Big East's third bowl spot, against Kansas State (7-5) in the first Texas Bowl in Houston on December 28. The Scarlet Knights went to just their second bowl in program history last year, losing to Arizona State in the Insight Bowl.

"We're ecstatic about having Rutgers," Texas Bowl director David Brady said. "This is a top-15 team that was three yards away from a BCS game. We couldn't be happier to have them here. The fans of Houston will get a chance to see one of the top rushers in the country in Ray Rice and the national coach of the year, Greg Schiano."

Another team surely unhappy about its bowl is No. 6 Wisconsin (11-1). The Badgers tied for second in the Big Ten Conference with Michigan and is ranked higher than half of the BCS teams but has been relegated to the Capital One Bowl against Arkansas (10-2) because three teams from the same league cannot all go to BCS games.

In another Big Ten-SEC clash on January 1, Penn State (8-4) will take on Tennessee (9-3) in the Outback Bowl.

"Tennessee is a great opponent for us," Penn State coach Joe Paterno said. "They have a great football tradition and a very good team again this year. They played well in a tough league. It's going to be a challenging game for us."

Also on January 1, Nebraska (9-4) will play Auburn (10-2) in the Cotton Bowl.

I feel for Rutgers, but Wisconsin? There is nobody outside of Madison that defends the Badgers. They didn't have to play OSU and lost the only chance they had to be taken seriously with the loss to Michigan. Their ooc schedule was horrible. They were by far the most quiet one loss team around.

The Texas Bowl is also only being televised by the NFL Network; not exactly a channel everyone has.

Rutgers deserved better then this.

I wish RU would play Wisconsin instead. RU is really getting screwed. All RU fans can do is travel to Texas and support RU. All BE can do is have its teams travel to bowls and beat the crap out of their opponent. Bottom line is we better get some better bowls going forward. The current bowl lineup sucks. BE needs to establish a NYC and a FLA bowl in Tampa.

I can't believe no body had any brains, between B12, NFL network, Tex Bowl & BE. With a little bit of poltics, Tex could of slid down to Hous.

Rutgers deserves better, but that doesn't mean that Wisconsin doesn't deserve to be in Orlando.

The bowls have always been flawed and every year somebody gets screwed. This year is Rutgers' turn to get screwed.

Don't think Wisconsin is that upset...believe their Capital One Bowl payout is about $3.9 Million more than what Rutgers is getting from the Texas Bowl.

New York Times Wants To Bowl Bash As Well
Tough Loss Means Lesser Bowl for Rutgers
By LEE JENKINS
Published: December 4, 2006

If the Rutgers Scarlet Knights did not recognize all that they lost late Saturday night, they were reminded in plain and painful terms yesterday afternoon.

They are going to the Texas Bowl.

Rutgers, included in the national championship conversation less than a month ago, will play Kansas State in Houston on Dec. 28, in the inaugural Texas Bowl. The game will be broadcast on the NFL Network, opposite the Holiday Bowl on ESPN.

Regardless of what happens in Houston, Rutgers

I never thought locking all these bowls into conference affiliations was a good idea. I can see BCS bowls setup for the nearest conference champion to be the home team if they don't qualify for the championship game, but tying up all the bowls ensure there will always be teams in bowl games they don't deserve. Whether it is placed higher or lower is merely dependant upon which conference you belong to. The current system guarantees inequity.

Considering the article cited already pissed off RU fans, I submit that the article does nothing to harm fans' opinions on bowls, as the opinions already were bad.

You are right, all these bowl alliances are just down right wrong. It is destroying good post season football. I like the idea of Conf. Champs having a Bowl, but other than that, it stinks.

Cincinnati Players Dissing International Bowl
Canada, here come Bearcats
UC to play Western Michigan of the MAC in International Bowl in Toronto Jan. 6
BY BILL KOCH / ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER

The University of Cincinnati Bearcats received the bowl bid they had worked for all season on Sunday when the school accepted an invitation to play in the first International Bowl on Jan. 6. at the Rogers Centre (SkyDome) in Toronto.

The Bearcats, who finished the regular season with a 7-5 record, will face Western Michigan of the Mid-American Conference.

The game will be played at noon and will be telecast on ESPN2. The payout is $750,000.

"It's great to go to any bowl," said Pat Narduzzi, UC's interim head coach, who was expected to coach the Bearcats against Western Michigan, but the hiring of new coach Brian Kelly on Sunday makes it unclear who will coach the team. "The players deserve it. They really do."

The UC players said they were excited to be going to Toronto, but there was also a sense of disappointment because the International Bowl wasn't their first choice.

"We were hoping to go to the Texas Bowl in Houston," said senior tight end and co-captain Brent Celek. "But it didn't happen so we've got to make the most of this one.

"(The Texas Bowl) is a bigger bowl. It goes to the third-place team in the conference. But we're still going to the International Bowl, so that's big, too."

The Bearcats, who finished fourth in the Big East with a 4-3 record, would have played a Big 12 team had they gone to the Texas Bowl.

"That would have been real exciting for us," said junior free safety Haruki Nakamura, "to showcase our skills against a team from one of the tougher conferences."

UC will be making its first bowl appearance as a member of the Big East Conference.

"We're looking forward to the matchup," said Don Loding, of the International Bowl. "We've got two terrific teams. Cincinnati had a strong finish. They had a big upset over Rutgers and Western is an up-and-coming program."

The International Bowl will be the first bowl game ever played in Canada and the first bowl game played outside of the United States since 1937 when Auburn tied Villanova 7-7 in the Bacardi Bowl in Havana, Cuba.

This will be the second time UC has played in an inaugural bowl game. The Bearcats also played in the first Humanitarian Bowl in 1997 in Boise, Idaho, defeating Utah State 35-19.

The bowl invitation is UC's sixth since 1997.

The Bearcats have played an opponent from the MAC in all but two of those bowl games, their most recent outing in the 2004 PlainsCapital Fort Worth Bowl, where they beat Marshall 32-14.

Western Michigan finished 8-4 during the regular season, 6-2 in the MAC, placing second in the West Division.

The Broncos led their conference in total defense and were ranked sixth nationally in rushing defense, allowing 71.92 yards per game. They lead the nation in interceptions with 22.

UC leads the series against Western Michigan 2-0 but the two schools have not met in football since 1980.

"We thought we deserved to play against a Big 12 team or against somebody in a bigger bowl," said senior linebacker Kevin McCullough. "Things didn't fall that way, but we're going to a bowl game and we're going to play a tough Western Michigan team, so it will be fun."

Tickets are $40 and $30 and can be purchased on line at GoBearcats.com, at the UC ticket office in the Richard E. Lindner Center on campus or by calling 877-CATS-TIX.
