CollegeCard Wrote:SO#1 Wrote:Big East official confirmed a report in the Charleston (W.Va.) Daily Gazette yesterday that Rutgers earned the most television money ($815,000) of any team in the league this season. The Knights had one appearance on ABC (at North Carolina), were on ESPN four times and played on ESPN2 three times. ...
Interesting, I wonder if its just based on # of appearances per channel and a set price for everyone anytime they appear on that channel, or if its more complicated than that.
UofL had a breakdown of:
-1 ABC
-5 ESPN
-1 ESPN2
-1 FoxSportsNet national (May not get anything for this since its Big 12 package)
-1 ESPNU (Probably very little money)
The Big East uses a unit distribution plan for its TV football - five units for an ABC national prime-time game or ESPN Championship Saturday (Dec. 2 this year), four for ABC daytime or other ESPN and ESPN2 games, and three for road non-conference games against Bowl Championship Series conference opponents.
WVU had six 4-unit games and a 5-unit appearance in the Dec. 2 finale against Rutgers.
The worth of a "unit" diminished from $33,898 to $25,448 as late in the season the Big East received additional telecast appearances thanks to contending Louisville, Rutgers and WVU. As the conference received more exposure, the pie had to be divided more ways.
The conference received 21 "home game" appearances, a league record for ABC/ESPN (and more than the 14 guaranteed or 16-17 projected at the start of the season).
Rutgers received the largest TV take ($815,000), thanks to the Scarlet Knights having the conference's only "road BCS" date when it opened on ABC at North Carolina. WVU was second at $738,854, ahead of league champion Louisville ($713,000).
