The Cotton won't find any friends among fellow bowls. Raise your hand if you think any of the 4 top bowls are likely to be open to the idea of having the title game once every 5 years rather than once every 4. Like many bowl items discussed in Texas and posted on this board, its much more of a longshot than many down there hope it is. Its not impossible but they don't get to join just because of a nice site for fans.

I still believe the Cotton will be a BCS bowl in 5 years at the most. It's a travesty that there's no BCS bowl in the great state of Texas. No other state comes close when it comes to football.

The Cotton Bowl has a greater chance in becoming a BCS bowl than the Gator, Capital One, Sun, Liberty, Holiday, Alamo, Peach, etc.

Saying that no other state comes close to Texas when it comes to football shows that you are very much biased and and is at least an overstatement. Maybe you've never heard of Florida or Ohio, or California. I definitly would not say that texas is the state with the best football recruits:

Class of 2007 Rivals100
Deep year for QB talent
Rivals.com Football Recruiting Wire

The first Rivals100 was released this week and resulted, as usual, in much debate across the network. As expected, the state of California was well represented with 10 players making the cut. However Florida and Texas each had 13 prospects in the Rivals100, tied for the most and a dead heat on paper. So the question begs to be asked

I think TCU is a good football team. They are BCS conference worthy... along with maybe BYU and Utah maybe.

I watched the game for over 1 hour...and I don't think ESPN showed ONE crowd shot during that entire time.

I must say...when ESPN has a financial interest in some of these bowls...they do a VERY good job of protecting poor attendance.

That was Miami-OH. I think that was the Rothliesburger team.
And then, after all that ridiculous drama, TCU lost the Fort Worth Bowl to Boise State in their own stadium anyway.

Um, okay. I get that the stadium is pretty ragged, but this is over the top. And while I loathe much of the superiority complex many a Texan wears like a hat, if they move the game to the new Texas Stadium there will be much more to be had from the Cotton Bowl than either the Fiesta or Sugar Bowls, IMO.

- Nicer stadium with capacity for 100k, compared with 64k and 73k in Glendale and New Orleans respectively;
- Much richer recruiting ground;
- Easy access;
- Plenty of tourist amenities in the area
- Tradition as the 5th oldest bowl going (twice as old as Fiesta) and is well supported locally.

The Cotton didn't drop down in class as much as the Fiesta bought it's way to the big bowl table with its officers among the originators of the Bowl Coalition/BCS concepts. Without early support from the Rose Bowl the powers that be felt having one of the bowls further west than Dallas would ensure more interest from the west coast. Big 12 didn't object because a) they were still pursuing future stadium issues for the Cotton Bowl, b) this would give them exposure in the west, and c) this would guarantee them a big money bowl for their #2 or 3, a la the Capital One and Outback bowls for the SEC and Big Ten.

New Orleans is great for drinking and jazz, but apart from that it's popularity comes from the fact the SEC teams like not having to travel very far. I can be done with the family entertainment side of New Orleans within 1 day.

Do I think the BCS bowls would be willing to share their pot with another city/organization? Not really. But if the BCS was to expand its membership a Cotton Bowl in the new Texas stadium would almost surely be the #1 option, and it's not a stretch to imagine the Big 12 moving their afilliation to the Cotton and leaving the Fiesta open or, say, to the MWC. Perhaps more importantly, if there is ever a playoff or some alternative to the BCS then Dallas becomes a prime site for major games over AZ. IMHO, anyway.

Travesty or not, billion dollar stadium or not, the BCS bowls are not going to give up their monopoly.

1. The BCS conferences would have to vote for it. That's the easier one.

2. The BCS bowls themselves would have to go for it, and if you switch from a four year rotation to a five year rotation, they will not go for it. The Rose Bowl and the B10/P10 were ready to quit during this last round. Where's your glorious BCS if the Pac 10 and Big 10 boycott it?

We went through the same hallucinations about the Big Apple Bowl: it'll be a new BCS bowl. It just doesn't work like that.

I agree. I was responding more to the "lame" comment regarding the bowl itself.

One thing to consider, there are now FIVE BCS Bowl Games, not 4, starting this year.

The way the BCS gave the 5th Bowl Game was to give it to the City that also was hosting the National Championship Game 1 week later (aka Fiesta Bowl and National Champ Game just 1 week a part.)

What they might do (I say MIGHT), is say give that 5th bowl to DALLAS, and just have the National Champ Game host city/site, play host to just 1 bowl game.

The old Cotton Bowl Game fell out of grace 10 plus years ago...when they lost out to the Bowl Coalition...their bowl payouts stayed low (mostly because of the OLD stadium they are stuck in...no high paying suites/club seats, etc... to bring in extra revenue), and let alone the Orange, Sugar, Rose, Fiesta passed them by, bowls like the Citrus Bowl passed them by in $$$ as well.

PS. Because January weather in Dallas can be REAL bad...having a Dome option will probably be a HUGE selling pt to the BCS.

Fans (especially those up North) want to travel SOUTH where its warm for the holidays...and sitting in 30 plus degree weather...is not their vision of "southern hospitality".

As for the Cotton becoming a BCS bowl.....Tom Hicks (TX Rangers owner) and Jerry Jones's son (Cowboys owner) serve in the Cotton Bowl committee. What makes you think they won't give the BCS very good reasons ($$$$$) to make it happen. If there's something Dallas is famous for is for its money (and lots of it).

I realize the Cardinals new stadium is actually on the small side, but its not too shabby itself from what I hear and have seen.

Conceded. I was definitely thinking of the Superdome at the time of writing.

Have you ever been to Florida during high school fotball season? Probably not. Florida too has high school stadiums that are better than some colleges with larger attendance as well. I am a native Floridian. I can tell you for sure that Florida rivals Texas and probably surpasses it. When you hear the media talking about the most talent, Florida always pops up. Much moreso than Texas. Thats why you have so many northern schools setting up camps in Florida. I dont hear about Texas anywhere near as much as I do about Florida. Take a look at the recruits in the BE and Acc, and you will see that every team has a few floridians on their rosters, not so for Texas.

Yes, I've been to Florida during HS FB season. It doesn't feel the same compared to Texas. There's entire towns in this great state that become ghost towns on Friday nights. As for the ACC and BE setting camps in Florida....let me guess...what state is closer to the ACC and BE states and better what state has members in those conferences? Yep, Florida not Texas. There's Big 12 North, Big Ten, Pac-10 and SEC (and C-USA, WAC, MWC and Sun Belt) schools that recruit in Texas. There's no other state that is as rich in recruits. California (#2) and Florida (#3) are close but Texas is the undisputed #1 in the nation. After UT, A&M and OU are done with their recruiting, there's still plenty of recruits for the other schools (BCS and nonBCS) to get.

Also, if we're using your logic....then California is better than Texas and Florida since 3 of the past 5 Heisman winners are from my native California.

Texas maybe the undisputed #1 in your mind, but the rest of the country begs to differ. The media has a different opinion, as does most folks who arent biased. Texas has 5million more people than the State of Florida, yet produces the same amount of recruits that end up in Division 1 football as Florida. Some years Florida actually produces more division 1 players than Texas, even though Texas has alot more population. So just because your lone perception was that "its not the same" in Florida as it is in Texas, it really boils down to being your very homered opinion rather than what the facts show.
