Those farmers had always voted Democratic since the 1800's, but as the Democratic Party Nationally became more and more Liberal, they started slowly moving the other direction.
I still think we have major race issues here related to a Black President (Judging by the sheer numbers who believe Obama is actually a Muslim extremist) Looking at some of the people elected, I really fear for the direction of our state.
I think that there are issues between Arkansans regarding race. There was a lot of "celebrating in the endzone" when Obama won in 2008 & 2012 that turned many off.

Yes, its still a major issue here. Obama got destroyed in Arkansas both elections, but he won Nationally and it really caused both sides to be at odds with each other.
We had guys winning state level elections here who made a lot of borderline racist comments in the lead up to the elections...but they won because they would combat Obama, or said they would.
Its a very backwards place. I've said multiple times I've considered running for office here simply to see whether or not a true moderate could win an election. But I'm not doing anything until Obama gets out of office...I voted for him in 2008...that's enough to end my chances right now.

NOVA has always been blue, nothing changed there. See above analysis. The problem is they haven't been running up the numbers in the conservative areas. It will swing back, all is not lost. It suffered from a combination of horrible republican leadership under Gilmore and then McDonnell combined with favorability for Mark Warner and the African American messiah.
Definitely have to agree with Ever here. Fairfax County basically evens out the Republican votes in rural Virginia so if the GOP is to win more statewide elections in Virginia then it will come on the backs of Virginia Beach, Loudoun County, Prince William County, and Henrico Country. Essentially, the "suburb" areas that have proven to vote Republican in the past.
Still, it's incredible how much political power NOVA has.
Chesterfield as well. Republicans have to win that suburb more convincingly. It used to balance out Richmond City, but it hasn't even been balancing out Henrico losses in the last few cycles (aside from McDonnell's landslide) and Henrico used to be 50/50

That sounds good in theory but when that happens, Corporate America exploits the masses.

And there will be 2 US House run-offs in Louisiana. GOP overwhelmingly favored in both, along with the Senate runoff involving Landrieu.

That's enough to end your chances forever. I really don't get the hatred for Obama in these central southern states. If you ask folks if they like Herman Cain, Ben Carson or Condoleeza Rice, they say yes, but mention the name Barack Obama and you see veins bulging in their foreheads. Is it because Obama has a little swagger?

Why does LA have so many damn runoffs? It always seems like they have another runoff in December every election cycle.

Because you have to get a majority.
California has a similar system, except they have the primary in June and the "Run-off" is the General Election. In Louisiana, the "primary" is the General Election and the run-off is a month later.

RE: Open Thread - Election 2014
More fun out of Arkansas. Voters approved several ballot issues last night that will completely change our legislative process.
1. Term Limits for State Senators and Representatives are now 16 years in length instead of 6.
2. A Governor's Veto may now be overridden with a simple majority vote out of both houses of Congress (In other words...the legislature can pass any law they want, regardless what the Governor thinks)
3. Governor's Power is pretty much reduced to a figure head role. They can only remain in office for 8 years, Have no control over what laws are passed by the State's General assembly, and can do nothing about those laws if they don't like them. They may introduce legislation only with support from someone on the legislature. The only real remaining power is they can appoint people to state boards...with legislative oversight. The primary power in Arkansas now rests solely with the Speaker of the House and President of the Senate.
Good luck with that Asa!
