Absolutely. And if he can't do that by year end, he deserves to be fired.

Yep.
I hope all of our fears are completely unfounded by February....sadly, judging from the past couple of years, I don't expect it.

agreed

All of us hope you are right.

I don't know that we will, but we could...I'm more worried about Tulane right now.

For some reason, I think we beat Tulane comfortably. They could be a spoiler though.

If you think we have a chance against Wichita after that debacle then there's nothing else I can say. Hey I hope you are right but right now I'm worried about winning half these buy games, SFA in particular. The talent just isn't there

there is always a chance. If Chaminade can beat Ralph Sampson, we have a shot against WSU

SMH

Butler went to 2 National Championships in a row a few years ago. Where are they now? Teams like this don't last decades. They have a good 2-3 year runs then disappear for a while.

In regards to our game, Wichita State is preseason #11. We're unranked coming off a 2-4 record out of 6 preseason contests, losing to DII CBU @ home. As the back court improves so will our team. The front court is fine. Josh let Kedren play way to many minutes. He always does that with certain players. Just like last season when 2 of our 4 guards combined to go 2-22 in a loss. He just kept subbing them in for each other instead of putting someone else at the 3 and leaving our 2 productive guards on the court. I have played ALOT of basketball. Sometimes I'd go off for 25 points other games i'd be 1-8 with 4 points. It's just how it is.

Sometimes you gotta pull the plug early on players. Not everyone is gonna play great every night. He doesn't understand this apparently. He is one of the worst team/player management coaches I have ever seen.

Some coaches lose because they don't have the talent. Some coaches lose because they are bad at X's and O's. Josh knows his X's and O's, Memphis has tons of talent.

Joshes biggest problems are he plays players out of position, he doesn't know when to pull a player out, and he puts way to much faith in the same players every single game. If Kedren is 0-12, with 8 turnovers and is bringing the team down the obvious thing to do is take him out of the game. Josh has a hard time understanding this it seems.

He's a great recruiter, he knows his X's and O's, he runs a good clean program. He just has issues with leading and managing.

Another example. Adrien Payne was 6'10 270 and he was guarded by 6'4 180 lbs DJ for the most of our game against them. Every team we played took advantage of that. In C-USA we were able to absorb it, against real teams we weren't able too. He has had team management problems the whole time he has been here. Last season he mismanaged the team. Cincy, UConn, Florida and others all beat us because we played small or because our star guards made critical defensive AND offensive mistakes numerous times, but yet they stayed in the game.

If you have 2 guards that are both 1-11, how much worse could it get trying to change things up? As a coach, you need to play all of your cards. Why have a bench if you're not going to use it?

I could go on and on about this. His pride get's in the way sometimes and the more people that tell him this, the worse he gets.

He doesn't need to be fired for an exhibition loss, but what he needs to do is learn from it. Develop a true system and get better. We are in battles with inferior teams several times during each season. Unless we have a few players go off during some games every game is literally a battle. Winning is hard against equal competition. Winning should not be hard when you're Memphis playing Arkansas Little Rock...

This is his season to shine though. The preseason was rough, can he and the team make a comeback and prove everyone wrong. This is what we're all hoping for, both sunshine pumpers and miserables. No one wants their team to suck.

They play New Mexico State, a top 100 team, at 9 pm. ESPN3 is the listing at this point.

This isn't fully directed at you, you just happen to be the one who used this phrase today (I'm sure others have too).

The only real expectation...and this is important...is that no matter how the season plays out...many will still take potshots due to losing an exhibition game.

They NEVER let it go...and mock fans who enjoy the positives by constantly reminding them of a negative...as if they are unaware.

End up something like 26-5 and a six seed in the tournament and many will still whine about an exhibition game and losing to SLU in 2012.

And yes...if our team performs the rest of the season...which really means the season since it has not stated yet, like they did in the meaningless exhibition game, then our coach will be and should be in trouble.

A very different point than those who will never let this go...as meaningless as it was. Gee Mimi what will you say if...

Nonsense...like EVERYONE else, at this stage...if our team duplicates that effort for the season...like any other school in the country...changes would need to be made. The chances of that are very very slim.

pastner makes elite level pay with mediocre results
had 4 years with a top 5 recruiting class and won 2 NCAA tournament games
His teams frequently look lost on offense like there is no scheme
He never sticks to anything that he says they are committed to ie: the full court press
he has under achieved 4 of his past 5 seasons

Pastner is a great Human being that cannot be denied, but basketball coaches don't get paid to be great human beings. They get paid to get results on the court, and definitely when they make elite level pay as Pastner does. Look at the list below and honestly tell me that fans should not expect more than what Pastner has accomplished.

Big difference.

Most folks would like to believe nothing more that Pastner can motivate a team to play with utmost desire and tenacious intensity, especially on defense.

However, he has to date yet to produce such a team.

Are you saying most are fans of the UNIVERSITY and not who is the coach? Why do I get the feeling that the OP is just a fan of the coach and not the UNIVERSITY?

Dale is a longtime, personal friend of Josh and became a Tiger fan when we hired CJP. Most of us here are fans of the university first, but I think if any of us where in Dale's shoes, we would share his same perspective.

if we have nothing to lose by being positive, then by all means, be positive. in spite of cjp pay check, I kinda doubt he has been here long enough to be indifferent. that said, I support him regardless. even if he gets canned or resigns
