Let's keep realignment talk to another thread and keep this one respectful to UAB fans and on-topic.

Very interesting. The A10 is at 14 schools so would they push to 16 if UAB moves there?

Then also what to make of CUSA's TV deal when one of its charter members has been kicked out of the conference? That I'm sure can't help TV negotiations when the best basketball school in the conference is shown the door.

Could the MWC viewing blood on the street for CUSA and react by poaching UTEP and UTSA? Could the MAC approach Old Dominion and Marshall about getting into a more stable situation? Charlotte was married to UAB but where do they stand without the Blazers?

CUSA usually responds from a poach by going even bigger. UAB out could mean ULL, Ark St and Georgia State all in CUSA.
Nah.
Although Britton Banowsky has wanted to grow, there is little support for that among member institutions.
CUSA only grew to 14 in order protect itself from realignment. The GoRs have eliminated that threat.
In fact, given that the CFP favors 12 and most of the presidents would rather have 12, it is more likely that we offer UMass, or hold at 13 and wait on rumored attrition from a western program.

There is a rumored attrition from a western program too? This is not sounding good for CUSA's contract negotiations.

Charlotte I bet could go back to the A10 if UAB gets in and play football as an Independent. Old Dominion may want to consider the same thing, or pair with Marshall to rejoin the MAC.

The MAC from what I understand is lukewarm to expanding with weak football schools. Marshall is back in football and ODU has a ton of upside. Both schools could benefit from a conference with an ESPN TV deal.

I want to offer my condolences to UAB and their fans.
This is just so wrong on so many levels.
The program was just starting to dig itself out of a hole...and now THIS?
THIS is the reward for the coaches and players after busting their azzes off an entire season?

Unless UTEP bolts to the MWC, ULaLa, Ark St, App St, Ga Southern and Texas St have the best attendance in the Sun Belt.

UAB is the glue in the middle keeping CUSA together. Charter member and the best basketball school in the the conference.

UAB doesn't change the math on CUSA for UTEP. They still have a conference with UNT, UTSA and Rice. I wonder more for schools like Charlotte and Marshall if they would start to have second thoughts about CUSA. Charlotte could bow out of CUSA before they ever join in football. They could go back to the A10 and play as an FBS independent like UMass after two years.

I'm all for Rice and UTEP to MWC. Time to bolt, if they'll have us.

Do not add to the indignities being shoved down UAB's throat. Do the right thing, C-USA.

From the article:

"A person with direct knowledge of Conference USA matters told USA TODAY Sports that the league's commissioner, Britton Banowsky, did not have enough support among school presidents to keep UAB in the league without football. There is no known backup plan for UAB's other sports."

I know a school that can rise up and take an invite immediately.

Allow me to just say unequivocally that Liberty is not a candidate for CUSA and that was kind of a dick move trying to make this thread about the worst day in UAB sports history about program pimping, especially from a program with literally zero shot.

CBS Sports reports UAB to shut-down football program
Just got a breaking news alert for CBS Sports that said "UAB is shutting down their football program and has fired their Athletic Director"... This is indeed sad news, as I was in Birmingham a few weeks ago to watch Marshall and UAB play, great atmosphere and fans. Blazer fans you have my deepest condolences, and this give me yet another reason to never utter the words Roll Tide.. 05-mafia

RE: UAB Coach says UAB Football shutting down
can someone from uab with insider info give us the dope on this? I really never imagined it getting to this point, and now that I'm diving into it, most of the news stories on the subject seem to be written in code, or written primarily to avoid saying something, rather than actually saying something.

it's odd.

I don't think this is a sign of weakness for CUSA, I think this is a sign that Alabama is a bully who can't bear the idea that there is money being spent on football in the state that isn't going to them. I'm sure they feel it's vital to make sure they have the best players lounge soda machine in the SEC and are worried they might lose a player to Auburn because Auburn's players lounge has Mr. Pig and they don't.

I am saddened by this news as well. On a positive note this can only help strengthen an already proud basketball program. I wish you guys the best. I know how sick I was to my stomach when the talks of shutting down the Tulsa football program came up few years back.

This could get real ugly real quick. If this is one of the early moves regarding full cost of tuition, you may see much more of this

I think this is more to do with the University of Alabama being bullies than anything else. They make so much money that they could pay cost of tuition for every athlete in every program without having to raise ticket prices a penny.

I recommend glancing at some of the stickied threads in the UAB forum. They're probably your best source for direct information

UAB has a medical school, doesn't it? I always thought that would ultimately save them -- or, more accurately, having a large number of doctors in their alumni base that are financially well off, and, one would presume, willing to support the program.
