Wll, you have SWC schools in 4 leagues--Big 12(4), SEC (Arkansas, A&M), AAC (SMU, Houston) and CUSA (Rice).

True. But the Big 8 to me was just different I guess.

Texas-Arkansas in the Texas Bowl should be a good one.

Texas-Arkansas & West Virginia-Texas A&M

Do I root for state pride or conference opponents?

Texas-Arkansas in the Texas Bowl should be a good one.

When I saw that game on the bowl matchups, I had to grin. My favorite games of my youth were the 1969 and 1970 season-ending battles between Texas and Arkansas. Bill Montgomery and James Street. Two strong defenses. Number one and number two in the country and national titles on the line. I loved it.

I'm with hawghiggs. Even if it's not the same teams in the conference, I'd love to see a new incarnation of the SWC. Start off with Houston, Rice, and SMU and build it from there. Maybe Tulsa, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Tulane, Louisiana Tech, Arkansas State, UTEP, Southern Miss and Memphis (if they don't get the Big XII invitation). To me, that looks like a pretty good G5 conference that would be great in baseball, would have a few pretty good basketball teams and would produce the occasional good football teams. At least those are some football games I'd care to watch instead of being stuck with SMU-UConn or Houston-Temple. Nothing against those schools, but I don't have any history with UConn and Temple was horrible when I lived nearby in the 60s and didn't watch them. With SMU, I can go back to Don Meredith, or with Houston, I remember the epic game with Elvin Hayes going up against Lew Alcindor.

Bring back the SWC (or at least a geographical facsimile). 04-rock

When you are dead, you do not continue to age. Sorry. Considering how much **** you guys shoot over in Texas, I figured this concept wouldn't be a difficult one. 05-stirthepot

I'm considering Arkansas and West Virginia.

Not sure state pride/conference pride will win out. I can definitely be influenced by hotties from said schools.

No other conference had the sheer amount of pride on the line every single weekend because everyone you knew in your family, at your job, at your church etc had an opponent team they rooted for through degree, blood or region and winning meant bragging rights over them for an entire year or ridicule if you lost.

The old Girl is gone forever but on this day, those of us who knew her can raise a glass and say "Here's to you SWC, thanks for all the memories!"

The ACC used to be like this before they added Florida State, then Miami, BC and co.

Well so its technically the 100 year anniversary.

The charter members at the first meeting were Texas, Baylor, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Oklahoma St. and Arkansas. Switch Arkansas and Texas Tech and you have the Big 12 South. So it didn't totally die in 1995. It got reincarnated. So maybe it is a 100 year birthday without the Hawgs and Aggies.

Rice joined before the first season started, but wasn't at the founding meeting.

If a P5-G5 split occurs, I think then you might see the G5, who would be looking a significantly reduced TV money, ticket sales, and donations, consider wide scale conference reorganization into much more regional alignments. Such conferences would look to cut travel expenses and increase ticket sales with rivalries that would attract nearby traveling fan bases. A new SWC similar to what you describe could emerge.
