LU (rpi 351) vs. UNC-W (rpi 45)
I'll watch tonight but I expect it to be a blow out with LU on the road. We only have one way to go. There is no one below 351. We've got the worst MBB ranking. Hard to find any positives with the MBB program.

Is the game on TV or streaming online? I expect a blow out loss as well. If UNCW plays like they did against Louisville, Liberty will have zero answers.

Well it's pretty easy to see we suck. I really hope Liberty turns into a powerhouse and Layer is the coach but the team seems to be going nowhere. It is too bad he is such a nice guy and represents what Liberty is all about.

It is unfortunate when a really good guy, who is a good fit for the program, is unable to succeed. Even if he pulls a repeat of winning the BS tournament and receives the automatic bid, the best thing for the MBB program, and the school, is to get someone with high profile (like Gill), who can bring some attention to the university for recruits. It's just the nature of the business/college athletics. Coaches must win or they must go.

I don't believe it has to be somebody high profile. It doesn't hurt, but it's not a necessity in my opinion. You just need someone who 1) believes and lives the values expected by LU, 2) runs a clean program, 3) wins. I don't think it needs to be a high profile hire. Use Chris Holtman as an example. He's been a winner wherever he's gone, and he's not a very well known name. We just need the right fit, who can win games.

You would think it would be easier to win basketball than football. You don't have to recruit as many players.

I agree we don't need a "name" for the next coach. I would prefer to have a young no-name guy looking to put LU and himself on the map. I don't mind being a springboard for someone because with the money we could spend, we can use that to keep that coach or get another good hire. We have the facilities. We have shown to have the support of fans when we win. We just need the leader to get us winning.

I think LU has matured enough as a school and an athletic department that we could spring for a name coach. Take Gill. He, at the present time, is a perfect fit for LU. In a few years, his success may provide offers to good to pass up, or LU may be in a position then to retain him if we are FBS or near it. A high profile MBB coach would make a statement, and I feel the program has sunk so low that AD Barber should get the highest profile guy that is a good fit for LU. Key is best fit for LU. Let's don't re-create the Mel Hankinson fiasco again.

I wasn't sure if Gill was a good coach, and I'm still not positive. He had a couple good seasons in Buffalo which, frankly, was a miracle but his successor was even better. Then he went to Kansas and was run out of town before he could implement "his" system, players, etc. for Charlie Weis who was just as bad as Gill was at Kansas. Then Gill came here and still wasn't that impressive until he beat Coastal this year. If we didn't win the Big South and make the playoffs this season, I would have wanted to move on from him as we've mostly disappointed in my opinion. I hope he builds off the success of this year and turns into the coach we need.

I don't know if Liberty is in the position to get a big name. We're not in a premier conference, we don't have a winning tradition, and we aren't in a super strong recruiting area. We have money, but we aren't going to significantly outbid to get a "name." Then every other hire would want to be paid like the last basketball coach. I don't mind ponying up for a good guy but not outbidding like a JMU home playoff football game. And you don't even know if that name will work out.

Key thought here is best fit for LU. I'm not saying throw money to some SEC, ACC or other high profile coach. If one of those schools had an assistant coach who was a candidate, or if some coach from a mid major was available, then at least talk. I don't think hiring someone who is going to take another 2 to 3 years to recruit to build his program is wise. Let's get the best LU fit and get the BB program rolling.

I share your thoughts about Gill. Up until he beat Coastal and then JMU and a strong showing at Nova, I was mixed on Gill. I think he turned a corner at Coastal. A very important corner for the athletic perception of the program.

I think we are on the same page. I think a high profile assistant coach from a top program would be a pretty nice grab for Liberty. And I do think any coach hired for Liberty has to fit the mold of Liberty's beliefs. I guess where I differed was the meaning of high profile. I don't consider an assistant coach a high profile since he isn't a head coach. So I guess does anyone know a good assistant out there?

What happened with McCay? It was all love and roses while he was here. He got Seth Curry and the team was on an upward trend. I remember seeing Barber's wife and McCay's wife interviewed on halftime of a MBB game. It was peaches and cream and a love-in. McCay's wife saying LU was the perfect fit and lots of peace and love. Then he leaves for an assistant position at UVA. Without knowing the specifics, from the outside, that stunk. I felt like I was deceived and he was untruthful. I have little respect for McCay. Can anyone clarify this for me?

I don't know much about the McKay situation as far as behind the scenes information. He talked like Liberty was a destination job for him and he said he didn't want to leave LU for anyone. But it looks like empty words as he left once Seth Curry transferred to Duke. So we brought in Layer who was McKay's assistant for his first of two years before leaving to be the assistant at Marquette (I think, or it was at least another Big East school I think). McKay had a highly touted recruiting class even without Curry and Layer was brought in to keep the good things going at a smooth pace.

It worked the first year as Liberty was first in the Big South until they lost their opening game in the conference tournament. Aside from their improbable run in 2013, I think Liberty hasn't won it's first game in the conference tournament. That's unacceptable for the Big South, and really any conference.
