RE: The New G5
The ODU fan is upset I pointed out his school has no business playing FBS ball and it's embarrassing to be in the same conference with them and UNCC

Because you'd have 40 small to medium fan bases watching our games instead of 12.

TV ratings. Advertising $$$.

I'm thinking Fox gets entire B1G contract in a couple years. Then espn, with its savings and now open time slots, teams up with cbs and tbs and gives us a combined football-only tv contract that nets each of our athletic departments at least $1Million/year revenue more than we get currently even after pie splitting is accounted for.

MW and AAC then would make even more revenue from tv with our individual and separate tv contracts for basketball.....CUSA, not so much luck with tv revenue from basketball, but the increase from football would be healthy enough as it is.

I like the idea behind this, but at 40---its too many. Think 16 to 24 and I think you have something (assuming CCG's are deregulated to allow true pod play). A 24 team nationwide est-of-the-rest league organized into 4 regional 6-team pods would work fine. That's 5 games in your pod, plus one game against each of the other 3 pods for variety. That's just an 8 team schedule leaving plenty of room for OOC games. In fact, you could go 20 teams and just have 5-team pods. which would yield a 7 game conference schedule---leaving room for an additional OOC series with a power conference. With a 7 game conference schedule vs the better G5 schools---an ambitious G5 team could schedule as many as 5 OOC games against P5 schools. This would give such a team a good enough SOS to reasonably compete for a playoff spot if they finished go 12-0 (or maybe even 11-1).

Your naive if you think the AAC has any interest in making sure the other G5 conferences survive. THe schools in the AAC were brought together for a reason, to survive. The AAC did not create this P5 mess, but it has to do whatever it can to survive and thrive in it.

Yes. A conference is about surviving and thriving "together". However.....P5 conferences not only work "together" within their own conference to thrive....they all 5 go one more "together" further and partner with each other to mutually thrive even more.

Nothing I've proposed splits AAC/MW/CUSA from the P5. NOTHING!....it is a "work together" on top of our internal "togethers" to mutually assist with staying at least in the same FBS "together" with P5.

And yes. I disagree with HerdFever for it to be a total merger of 64....our basketball programs and other sports are completely different and a merger of all sports is not even necessary and would actually decrease our NCAA tournament from 3 to 1.

Football-only of 40 tops.

Having tried and failed to find the ncaa rules on new conferences and auto basketball bids, anyone know what they are?

Also, what are the disadvantages to a football only conference if all other sports are taken care of separately?

I honestly feel this would be the best option to settle the G5 debate, let the teams just settle it on the field. Obviously the AAC and the MW would be the stronger of the 2 conferences each year. But if we just settle it on the field instead of the message board back and forth, College football would be enjoyable again

while that's not going to happen, I think your idea comes close to a better idea that they should consider following......

They need to create their own playoff

If they created the "Blah Blah" invitational, and had the champions of the G5 leagues compete in a 6-8 team tournament, they might be able to garner more revenue and viewership instead of the lackluster bowls they attend. The champion slated for the Access Bowl in the NYE 6 bowls can opt out, and the runner up for that league can be in the tournament
