Start a thread!
eta: I would, but I went to Rice. There wasn't much there while I was on campus (times may have changed, though).
Now that I reviewed this financial analysis, I make a Motion we set up the "PO' Folks Foundation" to collect donations for Marshall, La Tech, MT, and Southern Miss. We can let Rice and ODU be responsible for raising the Money. Clearly OWLS and MONARCHS got a Helluva lot more $ GREEN! Of course, FAU and FIU can contribute, too!

On the site they discuss their investment strategy, their results, their funding to the university, and even provide PDF files to their last several annual reports. In spite of that, you go on a 100 paragraph rampage built on hypotheticals and assumptions. Are you just bored or do you really think your analysis will prove more accurate than the actual, audited results provided by the firm that manages the endowment?
I do find it interesting that Harvard has 2,400 faculty members considering they have less than 10,000 students. So basically you're saying there's a 4 to 1 ratio?
Harvard has 21,200 students
6,700 undergrads and 14,500 grad students so an 8.83 to one student to faculty ratio when all are counted and as the Rice report below states it is in error to assume faculty to not work with graduate students
Rice has been as low as 5 to 1 just counting undergrads and 8 to 1 counting grad students in the same report U Chicago was 4 to 1 undergrads and 8 to 1 with graduates
Princeton was the lowest 7 to 1 including graduate students
but that report is older from early 2000s when Rice was having a 100 year review and future planning (page 7)
http://professor.rice.edu/images/professor/size.ppt
http://professor.rice.edu/professor/10_Points.asp
Rice actually decided after looking at all peers they could easily raise their student to faculty ratio and benefit from it

If you google 'UAB endowment' it shows 425 million. I'm not sure where they get that info.

they get it from the US Snooze rankings page
more than likely that number is accurate (at least at the time and probably a bit dated) for UAB
but I choose to list numbers either from the NACUBO list or in the case of UTSA and UTEP directly from the endowment management organization for the UT System
because if you start using wiki and other googled sources you can get a lot of garbage
as an example if you google the endowment for north Texas state it list $309 million, but that is not remotely accurate that is some fools on wiki that do not understand that "assets under management" for a university foundation does not equal an endowment for that university
because as it clearly states on the financials for the north Texas state foundation all of that $309 million is not an endowment
so I choose to make a list that used either the same information collected in the same way or information that was as close to being the same as possible and verifiable otherwise you end up getting "wikied"
again I am fairly sure the the number for UAB would be much closer to being accurate than many other "wiki type sources" or "google sources"

Yes, that USM # also appears to be a little low.

Managing $309 million in assets seems like an accurate number according to North Texas.

RE: University Endowments
The googled #s that I checked seem to all be a university's total assets under management (from various past years) and not endowment net assets.
For example, I checked Southern Miss for Beagle, which has $116.8m listed as their endowment when googled, but that is their total assets from 2014. https://www.usmfoundation.com/s/1149/ima...fy2014.pdf
The total endowment can be found on the last page of that pdf ($78.6m for 2014) and if you check the OP of this thread, that # matches what loki has.
Here's where you can find Southern Miss' endowment for 2017 that matches what Todge has. https://www.usmfoundation.com/s/1149/ima...ion_fs.pdf
tl;dr Endowments listed on the NACUBO website are correct. There is a difference between endowment net assets and total assets under management.

As someone who may or may not have worked on FAU’s financials, I can definitely say the net assets for the endowment fund are $275 million. How lazy are the accountants for nacubo? I doubt all of those numbers are up to date.

if you had "worked on that" you would understand there is a difference between assets under management and endowment dollars
and the UNIVERSITIES REPORT to the NACUBO using an agreed upon system of accounting
so there is no "laziness" by the NACUBO there are simply reports made using standardized methods of reporting that are designed to INCLUDE endowment dollars and exclude dollars that are NOT endowment dollars

Woah, woah, woah Rambo. That did actually come to mind 5 minutes after I posted my reply. Also preparing the financials for a University does not mean you work for a University. So I wouldn’t know how they report the financials to NACUBO.

True, I’m going to put this here as a monument to my inability to read financial statements. I’m going to go back to doing taxes now . I actually do related private foundations (tax work) but I’ve been in and out of the financials because our auditors do the university.
