Petrino and Grantham pull scholly offer, get banned from SC HS
Pulling a scholarship is ultra douchey. Louisville just keeps giving me more reasons to hate them.

http://recruiting.blog.ajc.com/2015/02/0...-grantham/

BTW ..... Dutch Fork is one of the top 10 premiere class 4A power HS programs in SC, and the defending state champions. So way to go Louisville.

Georgia Tech had a recruit suffer brain trauma from an accident after they offered him a scholarship. He will likely never see a football field. GT however didn't rescind his scholarship, they are keeping their word. Unlike team douche up there in Kentucky.

Foolish, short-sighted decision which will likely come back to bite UL later.
Petrino better start recruiting Ohio heavily...

I agree. We're no better than that those douchebags at GT (Paul Johnson pulls scholarship from Georgia Tech recruit). Oh wait...does that mess up your self righteous narrative?

Did they pull the offer or defer it to next Jan?

Paul Johnson's policy is pretty clear: If you commit, then commit. But if you're looking, we're looking. That means when you commit to GT, no more visits anywhere else.

So removing an offer because a recruit explicitly broke your policy of full commitment and no shopping thereafter is QUITE A LOT different from yanking a scholarship on national signing day because suddenly you'd prefer more defensive backs.

The two are simply not even in the same universe. Nice try, thanks for playing, here's a copy of our home game.

Totally different situation and doesn't compare if I am not mistaken. The recruit gained interest from FSU after verbally committing to GaTech. Now, the recruit has the right to look else where. And, the coach has the right to pull offer if he thinks the recruit would rather be some place else. Obviously, that was the case for GaTech.

I think the pulled scholly at U of L is worse because it was two days before signing day. Even if you take the coaching staff at their word and the staff determined that RB wasn't a "need", timing is messed up and it is extremely unfair to a recruit who made up his mind early and stayed the course even though other teams offered. What is he supposes to do in two days?

The staff never "pulled" the offer, they simply asked Colburn to greyshirt so that they could count his scholarship towards next year's class. All that would happen is that he'd sit out or go to prep school for one semester and he'd get his scholarship in January instead of August. It sucks, but most schools end up with a few greyshirts (including GT, FSU, Clemson, VT, UNC, etc).

But then again, that tidbit really messes up the narrative for the moral high horse crowd doesn't it?

He could take the grey shirt opportunity UofL has offered or if we unexpectedly lose someone (and we always seem to) perhaps that would be offered to him. My guess would be he lands somewhere else. He has options and can't go wrong whatever he chooses. We have room for him if he enrolles in Jan.

Note to Petrino: next time, find out which players are WILLING to greyshirt and go with that guy. Don't try to force a recruit from a top area high school to greyshirt against his will - bad for business.

in Hindsight...that would be the best way...but Grey Shirts happen every year...most successful HS coaches have egos as large as college coaches.

Starting with a scholarship and then going greyshirt is pretty lame too. And yea, it's super lame when Darth Saban asks for the greyshirt on NSD like he does every year. PJ's greyshirts (what precious few he has had ... less than 3 since '08 I believe) have STARTED as greyshirts with the provision that if a scholarship opens they get dibs. That happened today with a greyshirt who was offered immediate scholarship today.

The player in question, Matt Colburn, has indicated that he will decide between Wake Forest, Marshall and Ga. Southern by next week. Since he was South Carolina's Mr. Football, I imagine he may receive additional offers after things shake out today, but that is where things stand now.

Is it OK for a kid to back out of his commitment to a school at the last minute, but not OK for a school to back out of its commitment to a kid?

It would be a douchey move of a kid to make too. But a school can control that somewhat with policy, like GT does. And one might expect a lesser level of professionalism from an 18 year old compared to a major four year university.

We had a kid do this exact thing today. Going to Miami. Happens all the time. Best of luck to him. I know UofL holds no grudge against his high school football coach.

Apparently we needed multiple threads on this topic? As for swagger, we all know you don't like Louisville. The school could cure cancer and you'd find something to still trash the school about.

FYI GT Swag Louisville has had players develop medical conditions & injuries to that forced them out of sports & the Cards didn't pull their scholarships. Many of whom had never seen the court or the field as well. GT isn't special here.
