Seriously, people. Why should I give two craps about how easy it is for some guy in a bar in Wyoming to access a Southern Miss-UNT game? It's not like there will ever be enough of them to boost the money from the networks by any discernible level.

There should be balance. Reaching casual/new fans and athletes/donors/tickets holders are not mutually exclusive. If sports are the front porch and marketing arm of the university, then ignoring casual/new fans alienates a significant portion of the target market. It's preaching to the choir...which while necessary does not grow the student body of a university...what presidents care about.

There is no balance regarding the Tuesday/Wednesday stuff. That's just royally screwing everyone because the network told you to. Sure, you might be seen by more people across the country, but as I said before, 99.999% of that non-local audience will never so much as buy a logo-ed t-shirt or bother to call the admissions office for a pamphlet.

Looking at it from Southern Miss perspective, we're much better off syndicated on the local Gulfport station on Saturday afternoon than on ESPN2 on a Tuesday night. Are as many people watching across the country? Probably not, but the people whom we most need to reach and who are more likely to make significant contributions to our future still have every bit as much of opportunity to tune in, arguably more since you don't even need a pay TV service and the broadcasts are more conspicuously promoted. And, all the while, you actually get to keep the people who are already on board involved on game day.

There's also a certain amount of reality that needs to be faced. None of us are Notre Dame or Texas, and the P5/G5 split has assured none of us ever will be. That 4-star QB recruit in Colorado who's going to happen upon a Marshall-Middle Tennessee game in a half-empty stadium on a Tuesday night and go, "Hey, I want to go play for them!" simply doesn't exist. At this point, we need to be more worried about our own back yards than the lots 5 blocks away.

I'm all for better national coverage, but not at any cost.

Agreed. No argument here on Tue/Wed games...not sure those are the only options though. I'm hearing that the decline in enrollment is leveling out which is a good thing. However, to really grow in a meaningful way, USM may need to look outside its' footprint. The only other "peer" school that I hear anything about is Memphis. Since their move to the AAC, applications have more than quadrupled. From what I've read they've instituted new recruiting/marketing initiatives piggybacking off of the increased athletic profile (their words)...read ESPN exposure. The latest tweet I saw was something like over 15,000 apps for Fall '15 with representation from all 50 states. I'm not even sure they'd have the capacity to accept 70% or whatever their previous rate was...which leads to more students, fees, potential donors, greater selectivity, improved rankings based on those %... My point in bringing them up is if a peer school can do it (urban at that), I've got to think USM (with more amenities to sell IMO) can too. Just need to get the word out (national exposure).

That is an extra 15 dollars and you still don't get all the games. Casual fans aren't going to bother.

I have directv with sports pack. The only tech game that wasn't available to me was our FCS game.

It depends on the city you live in. For some reason, el paso stations choose not to broadcast all the games.

ASN Network gives you a list of affiliated stations... The list of available games is merely an option of what each affiliated station has the option of picking up. A lot of them aired football, either live or tape-delayed. A lot less of them have been airing the sheer abundance of basketball stock available from all those conferences -- all those options mean less are airing CUSA and airing a more local game available if at all. Other stations have just found they can make more airing infomercials, reruns, and local programming during time slots some options are offered. It'll be interesting to see how the ASN fairs in the summer.

The tourney is a sticking point to how our tv deal stinks. What I would like to see is

Fox getting 2 bball, 1 football game a week, conference final

CBS getting 2 bball, 1 football game a week

Then, ESPN would get 3 or 4 football games a year, along with 4 or 5 basketball games a year on main networks. Then, Espn 3 would have rights to first two rounds of men's and women's tournaments.

Schools, after this would be able to make their own deals for games not picked up by national networks for a deal w/ espn3 or Fox College Sports or local network to carry other games.

So you're saying that the Directv sports package you pay for in El Paso is different than the Directv sports package I pay for in Wisconsin? When I check Directv availability in El Paso zip codes it shows all the same sports channels available that I have.

Yes because most people get their local channels through their provider so regardless of package, if local channels aren't going to show the game, you are SOL.

I got all the games on the sports package but they weren't all UTEP games.
